The main problem with journald's binary logging is how space inefficient it is. The json export is smaller than the on-disk format, even though every message contains the same redundant field labels. They paid the costs of binary-format log storage and the only thing they got in exchange is tamper-evidence which is not as good as forwarding to write-only remote storage. Journald is slightly better for a rare use case (enemy action), but much worse for the typical case (garden variety software bugs and hardware failure), which benefits from verbose logging and long retention.
