I highly recommend seeing (or reading) the excellent Command & Control on the history of nuclear weapon development and how close the US was to a weapon detonation in Arkansas. Its quite amazing the sacrifices those who worked with nuclear weapons endured.

Well said...and to add to it a lot of US military power is already projected into nations that have those critical resources. If the US relies on food from volatile nations you almost guarantee future military interventions to ensure those nations keep sending that food. Global trade is great for items that are not critical for day to day living; water, food and energy can spin up wars very quickly.

I'm curious to know what do you think would have happened if you did apply for the patent anyway? Could you have done it without your supervisor's knowledge and would the patent have been awarded to you instead of the university? I don't have any familiarity with this area but was always curious about the social contract of research and patent awards in the university setting.
