Comment Microsoft Bing image search sucks (Score 1) 65

I tend to agree that Google Chrome gives easier-to-acess, less distracting, and faster search results than Bing, especially with the "images" search tab. In Bing, the link that takes you to the *actual* result is tiny and easy to miss. If you click anywhere else in the image, it will advance to the next image result.

Additionally, Bing just comes across as much more of a "have a look at one of THESE sponsored search results" pusher than Google. I hate that, too.

Bing = clutter and overt ad-pushing
Google = cleaner, more subtle ad-pushing

Just my 5 cents

Comment GTX 1080 respin at 1/2 TDP and $250 ? (Score 1) 96

If it ain't broke don't fix it - in that sense, I wish Nvidia would just do a die shrink of the GTX 1080 to achieve half the original TDP, but keep or improve the performance of the original, and then sell it for a good price.

Regarding 2560x1440, it's actually a great resolution for gaming at high frame rate and with a lot of details. First, because there are fast monitors available, such as Samsung Odyssey G6 or G7 VA at 240Hz, LG 27GR95QE-B OLED at 240Hz, or Asus PG27AQN IPS at 360Hz. Second, many slightly older games can sustain 120Hz and above frame rates easily at 2560x1440 on a decent GPU.

But with newer games, there is hardly any GPU that can fully utilize such a monitor.

For example ... is there yet an affordable GPU that can run GTA-V or Red Dead Redemption at 2560x1440 with high details and eye candy, while sustaining a minimum of at least 120fps?

Comment Physical disc better quality than streaming (Score 1) 77

I still prefer to watch movies on Blu Ray or DVD, because the quality is visibly better than streaming. Redbox Blu Ray rentals are my preferred source, the selection is good enough. And those TV shows that are only on streaming get boring and lose their storyline quality too quickly, so they aren't really worth bothering with - sadly even the better shows like The Expanse eventually devolve in a sea of evermore far-fetched ideas (=writing material) and refuse to come to a good conclusion.

Comment Modern day sabotage (Score 1) 184

Actually sabotaging a country in the classic sense is risky and expensive. Similarly, traditional grandiose propaganda is easily recognizable and ineffective.

But fear not. Today, the best and most cost-effective way to sabotage (an election, a new technology, a health care policy, or any meaningful issue) is to create, support, and spread a bunch of harmful viral conspiracy theories. You just have to nurture and evolve a suitable conspiracy theory gently via social media, and the non-negligible percentage of sufficiently gullible populace will do the actual damage for you.

Fakebook analytics will help you optimize your message for viral spread and maximum impact. It's the most exponentially effective way there is to damage your adversarial country (if they are sufficiently gullible).

Comment AT&T is not even trying to compete ... why?? (Score 1) 201

AT&T keeps making unattractive offers that aren't really competitive with Comcast's intro offers. AT&T is particularly notorious for demanding 2-year contracts on Internet plans, capping the monthly data allowance fairly low, and yet not even offering an attractive price.

So it's no wonder AT&T is losing subscribers.

I just don't understand why AT&T isn't at least trying to make a competitive offer, especially for Internet alone.
