Comment Carboard not so bad (Score 1) 214

I haven't spent money on a proper VR headset, but I've collected a few freebie (or £3-5) cardboard headsets in the past few years. The current demos on the google cardboard app aren't impressive, but if you revert back to the version that included the Google Earth demo (was it 1.8?) then it's a great free VR experience. Google have 3D'd a lot more of the world since Google Earth was included in the app, and running the old app uses the new data. You can "superman" fly through most of the world's cities in 3D, not only down round the main attractions, but through suburbs and surrounding towns and villages. In Wales you can swoop and fly in 3D through castles, mountains and over lakes.

Google in their wisdom have removed this from later versions of the app, and restricted it to the £150+ headsets, for no reason that I can see other than to drive headset sales, but revert the app back a couple of years and you get today's 3D data which has pretty good coverage even for a low-populace country.

I really don't get the hate on 'they' for singular. Don't you use it totally naturally for somebody whose gender you don't know? As in: "somebody's been stealing my milk from the fridge. Yesterday they took half a pint!".

Or: "somebody really loves my art, they left a great anonymous review."

Is this not in common use in the US? Do you say "it left an anonymous review"? Or do you avoid it saying "I got a great anonymous review"?

Am I missing something? My first language is not English, but I think I'm pretty fluent in UK usage.

Comment BBC doing similar, but a smaller box... (Score 1) 22

Hmm - wonder if since the victim used to work for godaddy that this was a grievance thing? Maybe he used to have the domain and perceived that it was taken from him by nefarious means? Anybody got a subscription to a whois history service that can take a peek? Doesn't condone this nutter's action, but surely there's more to this than a random attempt to grab a (presumably) valuable domain? I mean there are other more obvious targets if you're willing to do this at gunpoint!

Such as the EU. Brexit will leave the UK outside of this, and pressure for trade deals will sacrifice those kinds of protections that a large market can demand. The UK will diminish, and have to accept lower consumer protection, affecting consumer rights and leading to environmental impacts. What a ridiculous sacrifice on an altar of platitudinous "taking back control".
