PAS Dynamics Description
Performance appraisal systems were originally used to justify income. This meant that appraisal was used to determine whether the wage or salary of an employee was justified. This process was tied to tangible outcomes. A reduction in pay would be given to employees whose performance was less than ideal. If the employee's performance was higher than the supervisor expected, a pay increase was possible. The appraisal process' developmental potential was not given much thought. It was decided that a reduction in pay or a rise should be the only way to motivate employees to improve or continue performing well. But, more often than not it failed. The areas and business processes that should be addressed.
