Behavioral health is an important aspect of overall health that is often overlooked. A staggering 970 million people are affected by mental and substance use disorders worldwide. Each year, the global economic burden is more than US $1 trillion. Despite the crisis's growing severity, progress has lacked in other areas. Only half of people with major depression, the most common mental illness, are able to get remission using current treatments. The demand for treatment has increased in recent years due to increasing awareness. Unfortunately, the system is not equipped to meet this growing demand. Research and innovation are hindered by a debilitating evidence gap. This is due to inherent limitations in behavioral healthcare: complex disease etiologies and a lack of quantifiable markers and institutional silos. Despite decades of research, there is still no way to treat most behavioral health disorders.
