Description
Clavio offers a hands-free dictation solution for Mac users who write across various applications, allowing for different contextual behaviors depending on the app in use. Users can dictate text through a held shortcut, a wake phrase, or by utilizing the Always On mode, with Clavio seamlessly inserting the generated text at the cursor and refining it according to a writing style tailored for the specific application.
Each application profile can be customized with individual tones, listening modes, pause durations, translation targets, and optional actions that occur after the text is pasted, ensuring that client emails remain professional, chat conversations take on a more relaxed tone, and coding prompts are straightforward. Additionally, dictionary entries are available for names and specialized terminology, while snippets enable users to transform spoken commands into reusable text blocks.
Clavio accommodates 28 different dictation languages and is compatible with Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14.2 or later, distributed as a signed, notarized application. Users can take advantage of a free plan that allows for 3,000 polished words each month without requiring a credit card. Clavio not only enhances productivity but also ensures that communication is adapted to the context and audience.
Description
Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) performs effectively in applications that are compatible with it, such as MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, allowing for seamless dictation where text is inserted directly into documents and commands like "Delete hedgehog" target specific text. However, in applications that are not optimized for WSR, including MS Excel, Gmail, and various programming environments, dictation struggles, as the spoken words do not integrate into the document text, and commands lack the capability to refer to existing document content. Vocola addresses these limitations by enabling direct dictation in WSR-unfriendly applications and facilitating the correction and alteration of the most recently spoken phrase. Both Vocola and WSR utilize the same speech profile, meaning that any enhancements from training, corrections, or adjustments to the speech dictionary will improve dictation capabilities in both systems equally. Unfortunately, on the Vista operating system, dictation in non-friendly applications is particularly problematic, as every spoken command triggers the correction panel, rendering the feature nearly ineffective. Overall, while WSR is beneficial for compatible applications, the experience can be significantly hindered when trying to use it in others.
