Description
Initially, performance appraisal systems were simplistic approaches aimed solely at justifying income. This meant that appraisals were primarily utilized to determine if an employee's salary or wage was warranted. The methodology was closely associated with tangible outcomes; a subpar performance would typically result in a pay decrease, whereas exceeding expectations led to a salary increase. Developmental aspects of appraisal were largely overlooked, as it was believed that either a pay cut or raise would serve as the sole motivation for employees to enhance their performance or maintain high standards. While this rudimentary system occasionally achieved its intended results, it frequently fell short. Consequently, this highlights the need for a more nuanced approach that addresses the specific areas of the organization and business processes in need of improvement.
