It's funny. Laugh.

Journal insensitive claude's Journal: mfh (56) Score:0, Loser 14

So last spring, I was reading slashdot, with sigs enabled, and I notice that a certain Mr. Mike Hughes, UID 56, is selling his /. account on ebay. I clicked through, and sure enough, it was there. I thought it was pretty funny. Especially the part of the listing description that read "if you ask Malda nicely, he will probably change the username for you", even though this was explicitly stated in the FAQ. It was a mildly amusing anecdote that I probabaly would never have thought about again.

Fast forward a few months. I'm reading some random article and some AC is dazzled by the low UID. Something sounded familiar, so I do a quick google for "slashdot 56". Lo and behold, the account does have a new owner! I went ahead and posted that bit of trivia.

Mike Hughes' successor was upset that I pointed this out, so he posts an anonymous "mod parent down!". I didn't give it any thought and went about my business.

Now a month later, I suddenly have 3 posts in a row modded down. Granted, none were really deserving of any great kudos, but they weren't really trolls either. I had the feeling maybe I was being "hunted". I couldn't think of anyone I had pissed off, except for ol' mfh. And I had read in someone's journal that your "foes" could not mod your comments. I decided to foe mfh.

After further consideration, I don't think mfh had anything to do with the moderations. But after I saw another AC response to the old post [see thread linked above], I've decided to leave him there on the foes list. I think it's exceptionally lame to buy another person's identity, and his posts lack insight anyway. He gets friended and modded up through groupthink and the illusion of being an old timer or through the magic of early posting. Fuck 'um.

And now you know the rest of the story...

I don't generally care about peoples' UIDs, but I'll make an exception for this fellow. It's not so much that I care that his life is so void of fulfillment that he has to buy a Slashdot UID, it's more that others are being treated unfairly in the karma system for pointing this out. It's a well-known fact that posters with low UIDs are modded up almost without discrimination, and usually with good reason : those who have posted since the double-digit days of Slashdot UID can generally give more insight than those with higher UID; they've been here longer. This counterfeit clame of experience is pathetic on too many levels to list. I started browsing his posts, especially the +4 and +5 posts, and noted how they weren't funny, insightful or informative. This is a loser getting a free ride of credibility on the karma system.

Thanks for the information (which I was led to through your sig). I'll mod him down if I come across him when mod points are bountiful.
    • I'll mod him down if I come across him when mod points are bountiful.

And I'll be seeing you in M2, like everyone else. You won't have those mod points for long if you waste them modding down my posts in an attempt to prove some sort of foolish point. I mean, if a post deserves to be modded down, by all means do your job.

Besides, moderation isn't going to matter much after CmdrTaco and pudge get finished with the new moderation system, so by all means -- knock yourself out! :-)
      • *wooosh*

The point of modding you down would be to counter your being modded up without merrit, as what's happening right now. No one will be able to see your purchased low UID, they'll just see these content-less posts unworthy of being modded up. Those who M2 my moderations would have no reason to believe I modded you down for anything other than the fact that your posts were totally and completely void of anything worth the moddding up.

        So try again.
  • Perhaps the thought of buying ole school credibility makes this once long time (6+ years) Anonymous Coward laugh his arse off. But even funnier are those sheep that think because he has a low UID he must be someone of substance, like the internet wasn't infested with tards then as it is now! The only good that has come from this enlightening story is the laughter and hillarity that some noob hoping to big note has been caught out. Ha Ha *Nelson Muntz stylins*...

Yes, he was one of the beta testers of the site we all know and love -- Slashdot. He never published a story while he was using this UID, and most of his comments were under stories filed under the Mac topic. I don't know much about him, but he will be missed.

    • Wow. And to think I actually felt bad for a moment after writing this journal, and then making a useless early post to draw attention to it.

I saw your last [slashdot.org] 2 [slashdot.org] "UID envy" followups to my recent posts. It's pretty obvious that it was you, since you have a consistent style in your posting history and always respond to negative comments to your comments and stories. Denying it is just stupid.

I don't care how you justify it, or that you think you've been here longer than me, or that you consider yourself a n

It's not a justification. You posted an inflamatory journal entry about me, and I responded. You didn't even read my response.

I'll tell you what's lame... having a sig about a person on slashdot you don't like. That's lame on so many levels; it shows you haven't got any projects to link to, or insights about the world we live in, or famous quotes, or something funny to say. You just want to gripe.

You sir, are an a-typical Slashdot Troll.
        • I'll tell you what's lame... having a sig about a person on slashdot you don't like.

Almost as lame as having to purchase your credibility instead of developing your own. Use whatever justification you want for the purchasing and subsequent lambasting [slashdot.org] of anyone who points it out; that's your right. But it's anyone else's right to try and counter these efforts however they see fit, be it through moderation or a journal entry, and it's quite a double-standard to criticize someone else for having a sig an

        • This dialog has been the most entertaining thing I've read all day.

The concept of someone buying a low UID Slashdot account is funny... this guy taking offense to it is even better... the two guys coming to verbal blows is just icing on the cake!

          Thank you guys!

Anytime I can be of service making people laugh, it's time well spent.

I agree with you about the other guy taking such offense to this too. It's pretty damn funny. I think it's the only reason I haven't foe'd him so far is that it's just too damn funny.

I have put a disclaimer in my sig that should help even things out. If you like the fact that I have done this, kindly remove me from your foes list and we'll call it a day. If you would like me to revise the disclaimer, please let me know.
