Journal Chacham's Journal: Diaretical: Stamps purchase, and refusing the dollar-coins 8
I was paying some bills yesterday. That is, scribbling on one sheet of paper, to match or lessen the printing on both the bill, and my bank account. Bills are funny that way.
I had but one stamp left, yet three letters needed it. Since they had to go to three diffeent addresses, i needed more stamps. So, off i went to the Post Office, and checked my PO Box whilst i was at it.
I had a twenty, and two or three singles. I didn't feel like purchasing single-stamps as i wanted a few to keep around. A book of stamps cost $7.40 ($.37 * 20). I used my twenty, didn't think of an deserted Pepsi commercial, and was amazed that it accepted it on the first try. Although rare, it does happen.
After purchasing it, i had $12.60 left in change (the machine held it). Being i can't stand that new-fangled, politically motivated, inflation raising, dollar coin, i bought a second book. At that point it gave me change, a mixture of Carter Quarters and coins that we do not say its name out loud, and some change. Ugh! Quickly, i put them back whence they came and purchased from the single stamp roll to deplete my account. Single stamps. And they need to be licked! 'Twas like voting for Bush, the lesser of two evils.
Last time i got those things, i gave them away as fast i could. This time, however, i didn't want to lose so much money. Though, luckily enough, i hardly ever see them outside that machine. Mayhap next time i'll go during bussines hours, so i can get change in real money.

Also, I always try to buy Breast Cancer stamps. They are $.45 each or $9 for 20. The extra cost goes toward cancer research. Had you bought forty of those you would only have 2 "100 cent pieces" to deal with in change - and they give you a receipt for the $3.20 tax deduct

The extra cost goes toward cancer research.
Well, goes for the administrative costs of the charity, and maybe a small percentage trickles down to the actual cause. That's mostly why i don't support charities. So much wasted money. I have my own charity (that is, where i give my charity to), and as i know the people involved, i know my money isn't wasted there, and is given pretty much directly to those who need it.
That being said, the stamps are a nice idea.

Actually, I think it goes to NIH, not a "charity" (per se).

It's the Susan B. Anthony coin. Which looks very much like a quarter.

And I don't buy that "inflation-inducing" argument. Most of the things that I would use a coin for are already a dollar--they have a stress-increasing dollar-bill reader.

But people are naturally reluctant to spend "real" money. In the US that is signified with paper. Regardless of what people do, it's the feeling that goes along with it.
