Dave2 Wickham's Journal: Damn DNS

Looks like the DNS for a load of UK ISPs (including mine - Demon) is fscked. I know that NTL and Blueyonder are also affected. No idea why it's happening, but it's really annoying... and I can't log into MSN. ICQ/AIM/Yahoo!/Jabber, fine, but not MSN.

I wonder how big my /etc/hosts will be at the end of this...

Update: Just noticed a few USENET threads on it...

...but if you've got problems as well, then something must have screwed up at one of the main UK Internet hubs. No news at the Register yet on what's going on.

Just got MSN working at least... had to use ethereal to sniff the connections it was making though, which was annoying.

Check frontpage of slashdot. Apparantly, one of the transatlantic cables is broken. Could this be the root of your problems?

Hmm, interesting. Last night I connected, and fetchmail was silent for a bit when I was expecting email. Then it said it couldn't find usermail.com.... "Oh no! Have they folded or something?" Then I found that my browsers couldn't find Slashdot or various other sites, and the penny dropped.

I disconnected, and reconnected again. At which point, everything ran absolutely fine, and fetchmail was able to connect to my email provider's servers where I did indeed have email. Sadly, I don't seem to have any today
