Journal silicon not in the v's Journal: I'm a little bothered at the Karma system 20

I have read the FAQ on the Karma system, and so far, it doesn't seem to work the way they describe. I am really trying to be a good poster on here, but the Karma system seems to have killed that. The first modration of one of my comments was -1 Redundant because I posted an answer to a question someone asked, and by the time it got there, someone else had also posted the answer. The moderator just got to mine second, so they moderated it down. Come on, people, the FAQ said to focus on modding up good comments, rather than modding down.
As for the Karma system, the total mods I have received are Redundant, Insightful, Funny, Insightful. I know Funny doesn't affect Karma, but I have a -1 and two +1s, so how is my Karma still "Bad"??? For every -1, how many +1s does it take to climb back out of the hole? If there's more to it than simple addition of -1 and +1, then they need to mention that in the FAQ.

I'm a little bothered at the Karma system

  • ... but unfortunately I only have moderator access very rarely. I simply spend to much time on Slashdot and the compulsive re-loaders don't get to moderate. Maybe I'll plug you in my journal. That might help.
    • the compulsive re-loaders don't get to moderate.

Ah... that's why I didn't get mod-points this year. Oh, well....

      • Yea, it's biased against OCD people.

Well, I'm gonna not be OCD today, I've posted a Karma whoring comment and metamodded, let's see if /. will reward me with some mod points to help this guy out.
        • So did I yesterday. Got a score 5 (if that hasn't changed by now). No modpoints to distribute whatsoever.

I'm positively sure I didn't get any modpoints in 2003. Even though I had my periods of low-slashdot usage.

          • I had modpoints right after my internet came back after a weeks outage. Additionally I have points whenever I am away for a couple of days or unable to visit Slashdot for more than two or three times a day for any other reason. I also took some time off the page and had modpoints after that. Unfortunately I'm hopelessly addicted so I have to live without moderation. Oh yeah: When I only visited /. about once a day I always had points.

Silicon not in the v's problem seems to be solved. Amazing. Just a little

          • Ahh yes, the penchant for people to go back through and mod +5 comments overrated. Gotta love it. Just had that happen today in fact (and it was overrated, but waiting 24 hours to mod something with something that can't be M2ed pisses me off on principle).
  • Perhaps we can point some good moderators your way. In M2, when I see a redundant mod, it gets marked unfair unless the comment is virtually identical to a comment that precedes it by more than 15 minutes. So I rarely mark Redundant mods as fair.

Similar to sebi's case, I also rarely have mod points (I don't post enough in the front page stories any more), but I will keep you in mind if/when I get some.
  • I think a lot of moderators browse at +1 or higher, requiring the Slashdot editors to ask "please read at -1 to prevent abuse." It would be interesting to force people to browse at -1 if they were submitting a moderation.

It seems like this would be relatively easy to enforce...

Anyway, I'll keep you in mind when I get some more mod points.
Try to be Insightful, Interesting, and/or Informative between now and then. ;)
  • It certainly sounds like you mean well, and that's great. But if you want to boost your karma, try cruising the journals and posting there. Continue writing JEs of your own, and when your friends get mod points, they'll send them your way.

No, it's not in the FAQ, but that's how the system *really* works.

Oh, yeah, and it helps if you are/pretend to be a chick. :-)

  • The other way to get decent karma pretty fast is to post semi-inteligent replies to the front-page stories especially if the discussion veers into things you know something about.

These days when I post in a thread under a front page story I typically will end up with my post modded up to +4 or +5.

The other thing is to take your frustrations out in metamoderation (M2) when you finally get it.

In my experience on a good day M2 is all good mods, on a bad day it is made up mostly of posts unfairly modded redu
    • That only works if you agree with the day's slashdot dogma though. If you make a brilliant comment that fails to slam MS, GWB, SCO, or one of the other enemies of the masses here, you're still likely to be modded Flamebait or Troll. I think a lot of people whore their way to points by thowing out easy ones like posting links to articles that slam one of the above-mentioned enemies of the slashdot masses. That is almost guaranteed to get you at least a +1 Informative.

        • Once you get the bonus too, Moderators lose their minds.

You can post the most idiotic shit and they'll mod you up (yes, I've "gamed" the Karma system before).

Personally, I hate the damn Karma system. Then again, trolls generally amuse rather then incense me.
          • Well karma whoring was far more entertaining back when they displayed an un-capped numeric score. Signal 11 and others used to post some interesting stuff.

Unfortunately the powers that be decided for whatever reason they don't like this.

I will say I never actively sought the posting bonus. My good karma just sort of happened. For that matter I never think about how a post of mine is going to get modded before I post it.

The posting bonus is useful though, most stories these days are rarely worth reading a
    • Go to the most recent front page story. Try to get there before there have been 75 comments. Look at the first 5 or so serious top level comments. Reply to one of those in an intelligent manner.

I managed a +5 five times in one 24 hour period earlier this week.

      Remember, be quick.

      • I've managed to get a +5 on a story that already had something like 400 comments on it..

Seriously, my suggestions will sharply increase the odds of getting good feedback. How many Insightful, Informative, Interesting things have you said at the bottom of a 400 comment story that stubbornly remained at +2?

          • How many Insightful, Informative, Interesting things have you said at the bottom of a 400 comment story that stubbornly remained at +2?

True, However what seems to be more important is to either make a top-level comment or one not too deep (2nd or 3rd level) under ones already modded up fairly highly. But being among the first 100 comments or so helps as well.
  • I never get mod points, and i've been modbombed at least twice. If I get any, it'll go to causes like this though.
  • i haven't modded any of your posts. But how i mod when i do is this: i set the filter at -1, i change the order to most recent first (because they're the least likely to have been moderated already) and i try to focus on those that i find worth pulling out and showing off.

So there really are people out there who use the system, and i try to metamoderate according to whether i find a post really insightful, not whether i agree.

Keep posting. People do pay attention, and writing a journal is a good way to
