Journal Chacham's Journal: My email address is being used to send viruses or worms 4

Well, my pentagon email address, seems to be being used. I am getting failed messages about pif files not making it to their destination. Oh well. The worst that can happen is that noone will accept email from that address. Which isn't too much of a problem. That email adress is just a forwarder, and thus is only used to receive.

I am also receiving this email from other email addresses. Mostly "your details".

My email address is being used to send viruses or worms

  • Sobig.H is a nasty little bugger.

    Just like last time.

I have blocked about 2000 messages or so through my mailserver in the last 24 hours. I feel for the admins running systems too large to perform thorough virus scanning. I guess you already saw that it's supposed to get worse on Monday. We'll see what happens...

  • Even better -- I get hate mail from people telling me to stop sending them this stupid .pif or they're going to report me.

I always follow with a message about confirming mail headers before attacking the "sender" -- but I'm not sure anyone ever gets it...

My address is being used like this, as is a friend's; so far, all I've had are dozens of bounces. It seems to be a single machine, in neu.edu - if only someone could go round and disinfect it. My ISP deletes any incoming sobig.f (last time I checked, running at 1.6Mbps of virus alone!), but I still get flooded with the bounce messages. No "stop sending me viruses" rants yet though...

Always draw your curves, then plot your reading.
