Journal salimma's Journal: Online news avoidance 9

This is a situation that most probably a lot of people could relate to - there was a big sports game that you could not watch because you had to be somewhere else, you forgot to / could not tape it, and you were trying to survive until a delayed broadcast without bumping into newspaper/TV/Internet announcements of the results.

As it happens, yesterday's British round of the Formula 1 championship was a lively event (or so I was told) and unfortunately for me, the earliest delayed broadcast is set for today at 4pm WIT (Western Indonesian Time. Really confusing since in Indonesian WIT stands for 'Waktu Indonesia Timur' or East Indonesian Time!) thanks to Star Sports covering some pool championship (when would snooker take off in Asia, sigh).

So far I have had two near misses - dad was visiting a patient of his at the hospital and noticed the podium ceremony on TV - 'a blond guy in scarlet won' - gee, thanks dad - of course, it could still have been Toyota with Da Matta winning but that would be less likely than me winning the jackpot, at least in this current season. Then this morning I accidentally opened the sports page of Jakarta Post, proclaiming Barrichello's victory.

Still, all is not lost. I still do not know much more than that (apart from sis' remark that everyone on the podium were short, and that there was a prankster invading the tracks in colourful garbs). This will be an interesting experiment; it is one thing in the real world to avoid a dodgy neighbourhood, but let's see if I could restrain myself from accidentally typing http://www.planet-f1.com by accident...

The address I just typed notwithstanding, of course. And one of my readers could spoil the fun as well, but I trust the Americans to be incapable of that (what's F1?) so it's mainly the Brits among you I should be wary of ...

  • But the ultimate form of auto racing is WRC... ;o)

    • The brakes are certainly better than in NASCAR; I recall Williams doing a swap with a NASCAR team with their driver Juan-Pablo Montoya trying a NASCAR car, and he commented that acceleration was fine but he had to brake very early.

I wonder how F1 compares with CART and IRL right now. Certainly the latter two have much more overtaking - CART cars were designed with overtaking in mind last time I checked - but the one time I watched CART it was an oval race, and the pendulum-like overtakings coupled with my

  • Managed to squeeze past Montoya near the end, after much duelling.

Not so good for the Silverstone race-track, though. There's a lot of talk of no more F1 races there, and the fact that some nutter managed to slip past the security and nearly get himself and several drivers killed hasn't helped matters...
    • Curious time you chose to post - 5 minutes before the race replay started. Good thing I was watching the pre-race coverage instead of checking my journal for replies :)

It is getting worse for Silverstone; a driver died [planet-f1.com] during a support race for the British GP, driving a vintage Lotus. Considering even Spa got axed last year, and it might come back on next year's fixtures, I can see Max and Bernie using it as an additional point to count against the Northamptonshire track.

Then again, apart from this race

  • Not being able to catch a sporting event you're interested in is the worst. With all, that the internet can do, it is not yet anywhere close to replacing TV or even Radio. While I saw the Grand Prix (and am not happy about Ferrari's return to strength), I remember times, when I was not able to see races. A long time ago Atlas F1 used to have IRC sessions during the races, but this page has gone subscription long ago. You can, of course, always refresh results pages on various sports sites, but it is not the

  • Well, in case you haven't seen the race yet, I'm not going to give anything away (although Mon Templar seems to have done that anyway). All I'll say is that it was probably the best F1 race I've seen in the last 7 or 8 years. Not since the days of Mansell, Prost, Senna and Piquet has there been such an entertaining race to watch. F1 in general has been *far* better this year, partly down to the new qualifying format, but also IMHO just because the other teams have caught up Ferrari, and there's no single do
  • ... I spent most of the day watching the final day of the Open championship (golf).

Terribly exciting if you like that sort of thing, and peppered with surprises and shocks that would make any punter wonder whether all the stress is really worth it.

I'm not revealing anything else in case someone's interested and hasn't already seen it.
    • I'll wait until that Korean-American girl gets to play at Augusta - golf still feels a bit pretentious to me; not the sport, but mostly the people who play it, at least in Indonesia.

Which is why I have not been playing squash since I got back either. Squash courts in Jakarta can only be found in elite sports clubs, believe it or not!

      • Squash courts in Jakarta can only be found in elite sports clubs, believe it or not!

The same is true in Malaysia, as far as I'm aware, although some luxury apartment blocks have their own squash courts as well. I wonder if I'm going to get that in my new place [mayland.com.my] or not. Hmm.

I have to admit one of the main reasons why I was so excited about the championship was because I had £ 15 riding on Ben Curtis to win, and he did. Woohoo, an effectively free power supply for my still-as-yet-unassembled dual Xeon
