Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: Statistically speaking... 9

Is rolling 2 d10s statistically the same as rolling a d100?

If you have red and blue d10s, and roll them both simultaneously, with the red as the tens, and the blue as the ones, doesn't that have the same level of randomness as a d100?

This was sparked by the realization that a pair of d10's can be had for less than a dollar, whereas d100's range around $10.

Statistically speaking...

  • That is the same. Assuming the dice are numbered zero to nine. :-)

  • The price has everything to do with the laws of man [wikipedia.org], as opposed to the laws of chance

    • I'm not actually a D&D player myself, but i am wondering if most people go the 2x d10 route, or if they end up going the d100 route? Interesting about the design though. I could see how the addition of weights would increase the cost, but not having an equal probability kind of sucks!
  • Your d100 can give you anything from 1 to 100

If you use 1 die for the ones, and one die for the 10s, you can't roll under an 11. You CAN roll 110.

Simply subtracting 10 from the total won't work - you have an overlap between the single die with a 10 and the ten die with a 1.

    So what about subtracting 1 from each? A 10:1 becomes 9:0, or 90. a 1:1 becomes 0:0, or 0 a 10:10 becomes 9:9 or 99. That gets complicated.

Or you could just ignore the 10s on both. They become a zero. Now you can roll 0:0 to

    • Unless we're talking about something other than standard dice, d10s are numbered 0-9. Used as stand alone d10s, the 0 is regarded as a 10. For percentage rolling, the 0 is a 0. Calling one the 10s, and the other the 1s, this gives you everything from 01-99, plus 00, which is usually regarded as 100.

      Statistically, there's no difference between using 2 d10s and 1 d100.

However, using a d100, especially a metallic-tone one, will demonstrate your uber-geekdom, and that awesome gal who dressed up as slave-girl Pr

      • ...for a carefully contrived roll-off at the Comic-Con food court next year.

So, so very many possibilities! Way more than a single d100 or a mere pair of d10's could encompass :-)

Alas, my ubergeekdom was lost long ago. I still muddle along as best as I can, but I always seem to find the "geeky" stuff that not only does the mainstream world find geeky, but the geeky world finds, "meh." The worst of all worlds!

But... At least I can roll me some d100 through a couple of d10's yeah!
    • I was thinking of the 10 as 0. So a roll of 0:0 would be a hundred, and a rolls of 0:1 through 0:9 would be a one 1-9. Then 1:1 though 1:9 would be 11-19, and so on, and so forth :-)

The other question I asked would work with any other dice, and i don't think it would. At least not in base 10!
