Journal SPAM: The Smartest Browser and OS? 10

IQ League maintain a "60 Second IQ Test" online. Interestingly, the correlate the results of this test with a number of statistics available from their weblogs. Along with the geographical distinctions - like city and country - the referrer and OS/Browser user-agent strings are also mined, to determine the Smartest Browser and OS. The dirt? The very smartest is Firefox on MacOS-PPC. The dumbest? as of this writing, Firefox on Win98. Quick! Test out and move the bars on the pretty graph! Can we make Slashdot.org the "Smartest Website in the World?"

    • You do of course realize those web IQ tests are quite useless right? Among other things, IQ tests have to be targeted to the tested person, as someone with say 180 IQ would just end up scoring max on most regular IQ tests. I remember trying to do one of those, and getting perfect answers (yes, I was fully confident I got perfect answers), and the test gave me 136. I know for a fact my IQ is quite a bit higher than that, so I asked a friend of mine who had slightly lower but higher than 136 IQ to also try it
      • When 1 person suffers from a delusion it is insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called Reality. ;-)
      • Of course they are. This isn't even a real IQ test. It's a game on the Internet. Was there anything in my post which indicated that I put any credibility in this test?

What are the odds that "Profane Muthafucka" would be the most intelligent person on Slashdot? Even I wouldn't believe that was true.

  • However, the brightest star in the sky you can see unaided is "Sol" for crying out loud! That option wasn't even there! So, I really doubt the validity of this test.

Mini spoiler of Cryptonomicon follows, it's minor and happens early in the book, so it's not giving a away a lot, but you've been warned.

There's a great satirical criticism of standardized testing in Cryptonomicon. One of the main characters, who is a brilliant mathematician, is taking a military entrance exam, and the first question on the math section raises an interesting problem beyond the obvious answer. He then spends the rest of the test session working on this problem, eventually writing a paper
