Journal SEWilco's Journal: Windows Genuine Advantage forced update 2

The boss gave me one of those machines which runs Microsoft Windows. A week or two ago an Update showed up which tried to install Windows Genuine Advantage. Not wanting my machine disabled due to some random burp, I cancelled the update. Now more Updates showed up, but the WGA install is still in the way and blocking further updates. What's in this WGA update?

  • Oh. The non-WGA updates installed themselves today, then kept nattering at me that the system needed to reboot due to the updates. WGA update still waiting for permission to install.

      You can cancel the update, and tick off the box marked "don't show me these updates again." That seemed to placate mine for a while.

      But eventually I had to install Windows Media Player 10 for an online lecture series (the stupid school bought a server package that is 100% I.E.-only) and I was forced to succumb to the WGA install. Fortunately, it hasn't broken anything yet, although it feels like a sliver under my fingernail just to have it installed.
