Journal SPAM: Hezbollah Video Game 3

Here is what I submitted (journals I submit don't show up in my submission queue - so I'm doing this twice again)

An msnbc blogger reports that on Thursday, Hezbollah released a game, "Special Force II" The game is based on the 34 day battle between Hezbollah and the Israeli military last year. Players can go into Israel to capture Israeli soldiers, launch rockets on Israeli towns and take on Israeli armor. Apparently killing Israeli soldiers garners the player bonus points. The game was said to be retailing for $10. A cnn story on the game states that the game is a tribute to what Hezbollah describes as, "...a divine victory." and a tool to teach children tactics in warfare.

I can't imagine this wont make the front page. Not necessarily my submission, but I'm guessing a lot of people will put it in, and if it is rejected for a while, it will get accepted eventually. (After it makes the front page of digg if nothing else) Anyway - this makes for some interesting conversation in my mind. You have gamers who are constantly arguing that there are no connections between games and real life actions - especially violence. But you have the U.S. military and now Hezbollah putting out games, with the intent of teaching/influencing youth with a view towards military service at some point. Just adds an interesting dimension to the discussion I think.

  • As the II in the title suggests, they've been doing this for a while. Hezbollah is by far the most technologically and politically sophisticated force in the Arab world in centuries.

Supposedly one of their previous games included a character based on a particularly tall and red-haired Israeli soldier who had been stationed on the border. He became a minor celebrity in Israel for a few days.

    • yeah - you are right. this may not be the big splash i thought it would be. i've been fighting insomnia and didn't sleep at all last night. i'm going with that as my official excuse for getting all excited about it.
  • the real question is how are the graphics? Does the story suck? Will I need a hardware upgrade to play it?

    oh wait, this isn't IGN.
