Journal dead sun's Journal: 35W Bridge Collapse 6

What a mess. Eight lane bridge, thankfully with four lanes ripped up for construction, plummets into the Mississippi River. I drove over that bridge the morning of the day it collapsed. I'm thankful that I took a different route home, and did so before the collapse. It is odd, and frightening, to think that I've driven over that bridge twice nearly every weekday for at least a couple years just commuting.

My thoughts go out to anybody else in the cities, especially those who were involved, their families and friends. It's a total mess, for sure, and I'm thankful and amazed that the death toll currently stands as low as it does. I'm also, in a way, happy to see how everybody responded, with those in the mess that by some miracle weren't injured when falling some 50+ feet helping those that were.

  • I commuted over a bridge for many years back in the Bay Area (DUmbarton for those familiar) and after seeing this I was trying to imagine that one collapsing. Scary indeed. I'm glad you chose an alternate.
    • It's still hard to believe this one on 35W collapsed. I've seen a bunch of pictures of it, and the TV footage and all that, but it hasn't really sunk in yet. I biked in to work today, hopping on the light rail, because traffic is going to be a disaster in and of itself around here. That was the north south road in the area. I'll probably stop on a bridge that's a little west of the collapsed one on the way home. I have a feeling the scale of the matter isn't going to sink in until I've seen it in person.
      • You are a local as well?
        • Yes, I'm local. I moved up here to go to the U and never left, so I've lived in the cities for about 8 years now. Up until last year, I lived around 5th and University, only about 5 blocks away from the bridge. I live a little bit north of the city now, but drove over the collapsed bridge on my way to work the morning of the 1st.

...Wondering how many contacts are local as well, I know of a couple...
          • Too funny. I started at the U in the fall of 88 and never quite made it out. Home is Eden Prairie.
