Journal SPAM: The Children of Hurin 1

I thought today's penny arcade, Delusions of Gondor to be oddly appropriate with The Children of Hurin now available.

I am looking forward to reading the book. I've heard stuff like "if you liked Silmarillion, you will like this." Well, I can't say I really got a kick out of reading the Silmarillion. But I'll still read this, just to see how it is. I'm hoping the narrative style is more like LoTR or the Hobbit. I've always made a loose comparison in my mind between reading Tolkien and reading the Bible. The Silmarillion is like the Old Testament, Hobbit and LoTR more like the New Testament. (This is a rough comparison - that generally equates to the 'feel' I get from the books. Not something I'm going to nitpick over or try to take real far.)

A lot of the Tolkien stuff out there, including the Silmarillion was published after JRRT died, so this is not a first or anything, but it is noteable in that it has been quite a while since something like this came out.

My understanding is that this story can be very dark, involves quite a bit of tragedy and is probably not real kid friendly like the Hobbit. I'll let you know after I've read it.

  • Reading the Simalrilion (or however you spell that cursed word;-) to be very much akin to reading the Old Testament. Lots of names, lots of events with minimal detail, that sort of "ethereal" feel to it, and repitious redundancy. Having read them both, they are both in the category of things that while I am glad I read them, I have no inclination to do so again;-)
