Journal Servo's Journal: Sun employees aren't allowed to use Visio 5

Given my line of work, I've made friends with a lot of Sun and (formerly separate) StorageTek employees over the years. A buddy who works in pre-sales on the STK side of the house told me that his Sun counterparts were blown away by his engineering diagrams in Visio, because they've been forbidden to use it and instead only have access to OpenOffice Draw.

I'm all for shaking my fist at the Evil Empire from Redmond, but how such a large computer organization gets away without using Visio for their pre-sales and consulting arms is beyond me. Draw just doesn't cut it when you have to diagram power, racks, servers, etc, in a modern datacenter.

I wonder if dia is forbidden too?

Probably not to the degree that Visio is, but the friend made it pretty clear they are only supposed to use OOo for official documents.

Make the diagram in your favorite tool, save as image and import into openoffice :-D

I have never used the open office one, but after using dia and visio I can say dia pretty much does everything I need to do, and it is always available since it doesn't cost anything and is a click away.

That's actually what I do when I send Visio diagrams to third parties. (i.e., a vendor or someother individual that didn't pay me to produce the diagram.)
