Journal robi2106's Journal: Firehose Suddenly Visible To My Account? 6

So I'm looking at slashdot and suddenly I see a link for this "FireHose" thing which I thought was a subscriber feature. What the heck is it and how did it suddenly show up? Is this a new feature pushed out from subscribers to the unwashed masses? Or did someone send me a subscription with out me noticing it?

Any ideas?

By the way, this will likely be another "Journal Friday" where Jason posts a lot of catch up journals, as well as fixing hte number problems from the Volcano SO2 emission story the other day.

Firehose Suddenly Visible To My Account?

  • Just last week. I don't know if it's because of good karma or high submission acceptance or what. If everyone gets it, what's the point of being a subscriber then? You do, however, gain a quick respect for the editors because stories come flying in.

I've checked with two friends about this last week and they didn't have access to the FireHose. They couldn't even access the links to the stories I'd seen. I didn't compare karma or posting volume.

In the first week, I saw some issues that quickly resolved themselves. First it wasn't styled properly, but that was resolved quickly enough. For awhile approved stories that weren't on the front page yet were visible, but now they seem to be excluded from non-subscribers.

The FireHose though seems to eventual

I try and do the same thing...I wait until I see a well written one that I like and vote that up - things like microsoft announcements and console wars are definitely going to be submitted multiple times. I also agree on using the journal. It might even be better to submit to my journal instead of submit story because then the story gets out more. I also noticed that it does update but I can't vote up or

I wish more people posting Ask Slashdot stories would do so as Journal entries. Most of the AS-submissions I see aren't worth voting up, but could get some useful responses as Journal entries. I've seen at least three that I could have answered, instead having to pity the poor submitter that they'll never get an answer.

Here's to hoping they change the system so that Ask Slashdot submissions are always treated as Journal entries so that low-interest questions can get answered.
  • i don't see an asterisk by your name on comments - so i'm guessing it is there for everybody. you can always double check that by clicking on the subscription link up next to preferences and seeing if it shows you as having a subscription. it's an interesting thing to peruse on occasion (the firehose)
  • I got it quite a while ago (over a month?), haven't had a subscription in ages.
