Journal subgeek's Journal: a quick thanks 8

just a shout out to sielwolf for pointing me towards boxcutter. oneiric is available on emusic, apparently. this stuff is fantastic. it's like the techniques of venetian snares aplied to the mood of boards of canada. it's very purposeful in its composition, very much a cohesive point of view while managing not to get stuck constantly looking the same direction. i almost feel bad for using my free trial downloads to get it, feeling i should pay for good stuff and use the free trials to get stuff i'm not so sure about.

in other news, i went by bleep and got the new squarepusher downloads. he's mellowing in his old age, but i like it. it makes me think of a modern squarepusher (obviously) take on the melodious aspects of i care because you do.... it's still tom jenkinson, but there seems to be more song happening between the noises. "welcome to europe" is actually even catchy. but i think it still keeps the "i" in idm.

  • No problem. You gave me a lookout on Jackson and his Computer Band. I could see this being your bag. I really dig the later tracks on it now. "Sunshine VIP" with that crazy flute loop and "Chlorophyll". I think there's more degrees of freedom on this album then we usually see.

i think one of the things that makes me like it so much is that there are so many layers to it. it satisfies no matter how little or how intently i listen to it. like BoC there is a lot more going on than a casual listen uncovers. there's a lot of depth, but it's subtle about it.
      • BTW, did I quote you right here? [slashdot.org] I remember in the past that we had been talking about album construction and BoC. I've been opening up Sam to the wider world of music and the BoC came up at one point. [slashdot.org]

I dunno. Usually I think Music has the Right to Children is the best entry point... but it's also an investment. I really think folks need to sit down and listen to it nonstop three times. Sure, they can read, surf the internet, whatever, but you need to let that album seep in.

        I'm almost starting to think

you definately captured my sentiments if not my wording.

hi scores is the one BoC piece i don't have. i've tried to order it twice and had something go wonky with the order both times.

just for listening i think ABPOITC is a good place to start. that's an EP. any one of those tunes would do well in a shuffle situation. for albums it's tough to say because different people would respond to different albums better. (that and i think every album they've done is fantastic, and therefore a good place to start
          • I thought Campfire Headphase too but then Sam really didn't dig "Dayvan Cowboy" which I think is the best anthemic track on there. Maybe "Chromakey Dreamcoat" or "Icarus" since those are the more shoegazy... hmm.

My biggest BoC problem is that I really want them to release more material... but then they just released an LP last year and then Trans-Canada this year. Yeah, a repeat and a remix but "Skyliner" is great and it's a worthy bit to their collection. I dunno.

it seems the great ones are either overly prolific or too selective with what they release. you and i have covered this more than once. and i'm sure it will come up again because i don't see it changing.

my favorite tracks from the campfire headphase are "peacock tail" and "slow this bird down," though neither of them is really anthemic. like you pointed out before, it's more difficult to appreciate BoC out of context.

with sam i think it's just as likely that this isn't the right time for him to listen to

ok, all this talk of BoC makes me want to hear some. so i'm listening to MHTRTC right now. this is a good place for anyone to start, and i'm only as far as the color of fire. i know telephasic workshop is coming up next, and it makes me happy.

last night i remembered that sam likes daft punk. now i'm confused by this whole not that into BoC thing. to me daft punk is boring.

Haha. Yeah. The first four on MHTRTC is just unbelievable and why I told him that it truly is an album experience.

Daft Punk? Mmm. I enjoy it but in a different way. I think they are much happier with club track layouts (i.e. longer more substantive breaks). I think "Roygbiv" would fit into that mindset... but then
