Journal Cy Guy's Journal: Man I wish this was joke - IN to outlaw IVF for Single Women 7

this has been bouncing around the blogosphere today and after tracking it back to DailyKos I found a link to the actual legislation [214Kb PDF] - which seems to not yet have been laughed out of committee. Aparently there is an epidemic of unmarried women seeking to get pregnant in Indiana and GOP instends to ensure that if any babies are going to made out of wedlock in the state it's going be done the old fashioned way whether or not that is how the woman wants to conceive (Mike Tyson could not be reached for comment). I'm assuming the main motivation is to prevent Lesbians from becoming parents - but also have to remember that Dan Quayle was from Indiana and he had a lot of problems with sitcom character Murphy Brown's out of wedlock motherhood.

Another angle that I haven't seen brought up yet regarding the legislation, is that married couples seeking to get donor sperm/egg/embryos must be evaluated for their suitability as if they were adopted parents - something which to some extent makes sense but which also includes providing information on their fertility history and "pregnancy history and response to pregnancy losses of the woman" which I interpret as meaning they want to know if you've ever had an abortion.

Indiana - keeping the lock in wedlock since 1916!

UPDATE: 10/7
The legislatrix that proposed the bill has decided to shelve the idea at least until January because "the issue has become more complex than anticipated."

  • I actually read "IN to outlaw IVF for Some Woman". And I thought, I wasn't aware she wanted it.

Anyway, your remark about Quayle reminds me of something Robin Williams said about him at the time. "Bush [senior, of course] probably to him, Dan, I want you to go out there and attack Jerry Brown [wikipedia.org]. And so on his way to the podium, Dan's trying to memorize this, so he's muttering to himself: OK, Jerry Brown, Jerry Brown, Jerry Brown, Buster Brown, Buster Brown, Buster Brown, Audie Murphy, Audie Murphy, MURPHY BR

  • ... when you outlaw sperm, only outlaws will have sperm.

Makes me wonder just how they intend t enforce this. After all, people seeking IVF are paying out of their own pockets, so there's no ability by the state to curb it by withholding funding. And once the "deed is done," if its done in another state or country, its out of their jurisdiction anyway.

Guess its time for people to vote with their bodies and their feet.

  • You should really have to undergo the "adoption scrutiny" if you conceive the old-fashioned way. I suspect that people who have to work at having offspring put slightly more effort into parenting than people who were fucking around and...Oops! :^)
    • It's truly dis-heartening to see a crack-head popping out kids with no issues, they don't get the pre-natal care, let alone post-natal.

It's one of the most unfair aspects to life.

    • You want the government tell you that you (or your spouse) can't have a child and/or having it taken away after birth and/or being convicted of illegal birth (would likely be a felony, with likely 5 years or so in prison) for having a kid when the gov't doesn't want you to.

Here is what the legislation will require for IVF couples. Scary as is, terrifying if applied to all people.

      • It's not clear to me why exactly you are responding to my post, which jestfully suggests controlled reproduction in a Jonathon Swift-esque manner to highlight the ridiculous nature of the legislation.

    Too bad.

The government has no business telling people what they can and cannot do with themselves, unless it affects someone else's life. Creating life, however, should not be their concern.

The hardest part of climbing the ladder of success is getting through the crowd at the bottom.
