ryanr's Journal: Poetry and Dance Festival

So, I feel like writing in my journal this evening. Aren't you lucky.

Saturday, I did something a little different. I went to a poetry and dance festival thing at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Not something I would normally have picked. Generally speaking, That Sort of Thing is Not My Bag, Baby. But I went because my wife was dancing. This is something she has taken up recently. She started with a belly dancing class, and has just kind of taken up with this dance troupe.

It's good for her, gets her out of the house a bit, it's in the evening mostly, so the schedule works out. And she has fun at it.

I had not had a chance to see her dance yet, so I drove in to see her. Naturally, I liked seeing her dance, I was proud. She did a good job.

I also kinda liked some of the other stuff as well. it was, as the name implies, mostly dance and poetry. About 4 hours worth, though it didn't seem quite that long. There were even a few occasions where I thought to myself "Hey look! Real beatniks!". Even those weren't unenjoyable.

Anyway, I was surprised that I had a decent time at said festival. That is all.

You're not concerned at all?

If my wife had joined a belly dancing troupe I would be really worried that she would leave to become some kind of gypsy who travels the country stealing people's hubcaps. I'd also be pretty confused about how I ended up with a wife, but the gypsy thing takes priority.

Hmm... I hadn't considered that. I was too busy thinking "Hey! My wife can belly dance..."

My gf loves to dance, although I have yet to see her do it...something about a packed club and her only being 5'2" kinda makes her hard to locate...especially since I don't dance.

So, did you see Maynard G. Krebs amongst the beatnicks?

Yeah, I'm a complete non-dancer myself. My wife likes it, so maybe this is a decent solution.

I think the most amusing was this one woman who looked like a cross between David Byrnes and Granny from The Beverly Hillbillies. Older, short woman, wearing a beret, and a huge suit with massive shoulder pads.

Wife says she was drinking backstage, and spilled vodka everywhere.

I'm totally picturing my friend's mom [lindsayb.net]...in a different getup of course...she's frequently drinking vodka and usually dressed in hippie/beatnick style :)
