Journal buffer-overflowed's Journal: No one mentioned 12

It's the 4 year anniversary of September 11th, 2001 at least not that I saw yet.

So, there you have it, it's the anniversary of that event. Not much else I can say on that topic.

Salut.

  • It is somewhat indirect [slashdot.org] but on topic. But you wouldn't have gotten a message about it so maybe that doesn't count.
  • by Katrina in our area. Not forgotten, just more to the back of our minds at the present time.
  • How dare you use a Freedom^WFrench word in conjunction with our patriotic victims!

    • Because the Liberty^WGerman equivalent sounds too facist?

Speaking of Liberty^WGerman food, I really hate Liberty Cabbage.

Oh come now. There hasn't been any anti-German feeling in America for at least three weeks.

Speaking of Liberty^WGerman food, I really hate Liberty Cabbage.

Tell me about it. Two foods I really don't like: pork and cabbage. So I end up in Germany, land of schnitzel and sauerkraut. Go figure.

What really pisses me off: they use the work "steak" in German. Mind you, in English if you say "steak" you probably think "beef", unless otherwise stated

        • Which I really don't like much...pig's a filthy animal.

See, on this continent, we have this marvelous invention: running water. You can wash things. The other new invention is fire. Cook something long enough, and the nasty infectious bits die.

          • Clearly you aren't familiar with German pork. Pigs in Germany were crossed with dogs by the Kaiser for what he thought was a delectable treat. This is why the word for "pork" in German is Schwein, which (though you may never have guessed it) is derived from the German epithet Schweinhund ("pig-dog"). And since you'd never eat a dog, you'd not want to eat a German pig.

            It's a fact.

            Cheers,

            Ethelred

        • You could try to eat healthier food like that :)

Come to think of it, though, I can't think of a single German fish dish?

There's an old Tom Lehrer song recorded in the early to mid sixties. I think it's "MLF Lullaby" but I'm not totally certain. In the first verse [err, third verse, nothing like the first] there's a bit about, well, wait, let me dig the lyrics up for real...

Sleep, baby, sleep, in peace may you slumber,
No danger lurks, your sleep to encumber,
We've got the missiles, peace to determine,
And one of the fingers on the button
    • it would have been really interesting had the French decided to protect their substantial economic interests in Iraq.

Might as well thank the French for being diplomatic and taking the huge dent in their pocketbooks, rather than confront us. If they sent troops down there, who knows, the EU might have become downright hostile to us, pun intended.
