1) no paper trail of opinions
2) 2 years of experience being a judge

Not merely Republican. He is simply well known. He's argued cases before the Supreme Court more than three dozen times. He's represented conservative and liberal interests in private practice. He is well-regarded by all nine of the current justices.

The original poster questioned the nomination of Justice Roberts due to the lack of a record of his positions. I replied that he was "well known" in Washington Republican circles. I had read an article that said Roberts was not perceived as an "unknown quantity" by Republican insiders, because of the long term schmoozing and cultivation of them.

Ah, you misunderstood. I implied no such thing. What I stated is that how well-known he is extends beyond Republican circles, and I implied nothing beyond that. And then I went on to explain some of the ways he is well-known that extend beyond Republican circles, to drive home that one and only point.
