Journal sickofthisshit's Journal: So what am I sick of? 7

So, this new slashdot account is "sickofthisshit."

What is it that I'm sick of?

One thing I'm particularly sick of: the fundamentalist wackos who come out of the woodwork everytime there is some article about evolution. Please. This is the twenty-fucking-first century; anybody technically literate should understand that evolution happened, that the universe (and earth) are billions of years old, and that the Bible isn't a repository of scientifically accurate information.

None of this "well, six days could be each billions of years long, so I can still believe in Genesis being literally true. Well, not literally literally. Just approximately literally." bullshit. Just plain DID NOT HAPPEN THAT WAY.

People, "equal time for intelligent design" is about like "equal time for 2+2=5." Can I prove evolution happened? Depends what you mean by "prove." Can you prove 2+2=4? Depends on what *I* mean by prove.

Oh, and by the way, how about equal time for "a flat earth"?

  • Wow.

You should put this as a disclaimer on any conversation regarding evolution with you. It would save you and us "wackos" tons of time.

Y' know, given that you've written off reasoning and all.
    • Exactly where have I "written off reasoning"? The only thing I've written off is UNreasoning apology for Biblical "figurative literalism" which is about as far from "reasoning" as one can get. Perhaps, in the 12th century, reading Scripture was a useful basis for discussing metaphysics. Now, in the 21st century (are you with me here?) we have such things as SCIENCE which allow us to understand the world in a much more rigorous way. Those people nostalgic for Scholasticism are just OUT OF DATE.

      • I have proven exceptional reading comprehension skills, thanks. Documented, in fact. Even more impeccable, I like to think, is my common sense and logic, though I have no objective proof of that. Yet.

You demonstrate a high level of intelligence. Yet, unfortunately, your retorts are worthy of a 13 year old boy armed with information he lacks the wisdom to apply. Your bitterness subverts any point you hope to make. Likewise, your "points" usually consist primarily of attempts at pulling the rug from under th
        • You confuse anger with bitterness. Your metaphysics continues to be weak; I need no "cushion" because I haven't "lept" from any "cliff." On the contrary, I'm on solid ground, and I know the weaknesses as well as strengths of the mental constructs I place upon this foundation.

You still have not indicated where I have departed from reason, instead choosing to speculate on my emotional state.
          • You confuse anger with bitterness.

No, I'm not confused. You can't escape what you've communicated quite clearly. Read your posts and tell me how you think you come across.

            Your metaphysics continues to be weak;

Weak is a relative term. Weak compared to what?

I need no "cushion" because I haven't "lept" from any "cliff." On the contrary, I'm on solid ground, and I know the weaknesses as well as strengths of the mental constructs I place upon this foundation.

            • The principle of evolution by natural selection is by no means a "fad." It is the single principle which unifies the biological knowledge accumulated over the past 150 years, even while that knowledge has expanded exponentially since Darwin's time. Darwin's insight is perhaps among the top ten intellectual achievements of human history. Thousands of observations every year continue to add to this knowledge, without causing any reasonable doubt as to the basic truth of Darwin's scheme.

To dismiss that as a f

None of which means anything except these observations have been crutched along by Darwin's theory. That's really the best we can do?! I could build "support" for any number of fanciful theories if I was working with them as my basis. Have not flaws been discovered in Einstein's "amazing" theories, so why give one weak scientific claim more credence over a powerful, more meaningful basis for life.

To dismiss that as a fad
