So anyone who didn't have major plans this weekend can add compiling and booting 2.1.95 to the list of stuff that needs to be done. It's a bug fix release (woohoo!) with the new SMP-safe disk drivers.

NPR Linux Forum

jeff covey wrote in to tell us that he asked NPR to start a Linux Discussion on their discussion pages. You can join in here. I'm quite amazed at the positive stuff I've heard about NPR after their little Linux story a few days ago.

Linux 2.1.94 Released

Linus, being the kind hearted developer he is, decided to release Linux 2.1.94 to the usual place. Only a few KB away from 11MB, updates include sound documentation, MAJOR sound updates, and init fixes for those having trouble with 2.1.93 on non-x86 platforms.

Linux in Electronic Design Automation

David F. Skoll writes "There's a nice story in Integrated System Design, a magazine for electronic designers, about why engineers prefer UNIX to NT. There's positive mention of Linux. Read it here As an electrical engineer, I'm happy to see ISD editorials like this!"

Linux vs. Windows

ZDNet is running an interesting editorial titled "The next battleground: Linux vs. Windows". The article discusses the possibility of Linux being the operating system to possibly dethrone Windows. I personally feel we've got a lot of work to do, but it's not too outrageous a possibility!

Marc Andreessen On Linux

Cool Linux Articles

John Bell wrote in this link where Peter Coffee talks about Unix in Mission Critical rolls. The other article is by Mark Gibbs and is titled "Lookin' into Linux" This link requires registration to read though. John noted several technical problems, but it is still a nice newbie article.

Linux Helping Dallas Schools

Kevin Searle writes "The Dallas Observer (a print and online weekly newspaper in Dallas, Texas) printed an article about a group of Linux users (members of NTLUG) have asked the scandal-filled Dallas Independent School District to open up their financial records. Russel Fish has a site that will house the data (much of which is on paper) and allow it to be searchable. This is major news in the opening of public records and making them available on the internet. Linux is mentioned about six times (including a reference to world freedom)."

Should You Try a Devel Kernel? (editorial)

Raj Dutt has done a nice writeup on why you should, or shouldn't try a devel kernel. If you've never tried one, and wonder why or even if you should try, you should read on. Especially timely considering yesterdays feature freeze, we're on the home stretch for 2.2.0.

Linux @ Comdex(R)

Andrew Hobgood wrote in to tell us about the Linux Comdex Project. They are seeking sponsors so that they can get a real booth at Comdex to help educate the world about Linux. This sorta thing looks really good to Dilbert's Boss, and let's face it, he's the guy we need to convince for Linux to become a real alternative in business.

Linux at UniForum NZ

Rodger Donaldson writes "Further proof that Linux is edging its way into the mainstream, this time of the Unix community: I've just picked up the program for this year's UniForum NZ. The President's note mentions "LINUX going big time". Amongst the events are three forums on Linux's success in the mainstream commercial marketplace, including a discussion on mission-critical systems. There is also a full-day, multi disctribution hands-on install lab.".

Alan Cox Joins RedHat

Well, even though Alan Cox apparently doesn't think that Slashdot is as cool as freshmeat *grin*, it still is really cool that he's been hired to work at RedHat in a paid position developing (surprise!) Linux Stuff. Good move for all involved.

Linux in the Press

C|Net is running a review of "alternative" operating systems for the Intel platform. The review talks about the various political and technical merits of Linux, OS/2, FreeBSD, BeOS, and New Deal Office 98. The article is very fair, and presents a suprisingly well supported discussion of benefits and disadvantages of the operating systems. Worth a read.

GGI Moving To BSD?

The Laughing Fool wrote in to tell us that the GGI project is currently considering moving to BSD as the primary platform. (GGI is a fast library of functions for video and sound. Sorta like DirectX) TLF sent in this link where he talks about this. There are a lot of hard feelings here, and a lot of bruised egos. And there is some cool ideas that need a home. No matter what happens, I hope both BSD and Linux get GGI.
