Latest Apple's security update crashes Perl->

Submitted by
On Elpeleg
On Elpeleg writes "According to numerous complaints by Mac users world wide, the Apple's latest Mac OS X security update crashes Perl. The error reproduced by the Mac users was mostly something like this:

% perl -MIO IO object version 1.22 does not match bootstrap parameter 1.23 at /System/Library/Perl/5.8.8/darwin-thread-multi-2level/XSLoader.pm line 94. Compilation failed in require. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted

This error most likely indicates that the Apple's security update reverts Mac Perl to an older IO object incompatible with newer CPAN modules.
So far, it seems that what is common for most of the complaints is that they occur on pre installed Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), on Perl distro compiled into the OS, or if one has updated the distro via CPAN.
There is no known fix yet, however this is one more example of how little one can trust Perl distributions by third part vendors, a similar issue was reported not long time ago for Fedora and for Free BSD."

Google-Misplaced slash banned the entire Internet->

Submitted by

On Elpeleg writes "One misplaced slash may cost Google in no less then 25,000 USD: Those of you who did a Google search between 6:30 a.m. PST and 7:25 a.m. PST this morning were most likely seeing the error message "This site may harm your computer" resulting for every search attempt. This major error must have cost Google 5 millions USD for lost advertising time and also resulted in a massive Denial Of Service attack on one at least of its services providers. After some hours, Google explained that as a result of a human error, someone must have saved the address "/" as a URL for a malicious site, instead of saving the malicious sites file at the current "/" folder. The result of adding the slash to the list resulted by assigning all websites on the Internet as malicious sites."

Perl migrates to git versioning control system.-> 1

Submitted by
On Elpeleg
On Elpeleg writes "The Perl Foundation has announced at the http://use.perl.org/ website switching the version control systems to git. According to the announcement Perl 5 migration to git would allow the language development team to take advantage of git's extensive offline and distributed versioning support.

Git is open source and readily available to all Perl developers. Among other advantages, the announcement notes that git simplifies commits, producing fewer administrative overheads for integrating contributions. Git's change analysis tools are also singled out for praise.

The transformation from Perforce to git apparently took over a year. Sam Vilain of Catalyst IT "spent more than a year building custom tools to transform 21 years of Perl history into the first ever unified repository of every single change to Perl." The git repository incorporates historic snapshot releases and patch sets, which is frankly both cool and historically pleasing. Some of the patch sets were apparently recovered from old hard drives, notching up the geek satisfaction factor even more.

Developers can download a copy of the current Perl 5 repository directly from the perl.org site, where the source is hosted."
