Journal twitter's Journal: Groklaw Alarm: M$ People at ISO Move to Take Over ODF. 3

Think M$ would be content to get it's sham XML "standard" pushed through ISO? Groklaw gives us the latest in M$'s assault on ODF and the ISO, the OOXML people want to control ODF too:

Guess what the SC 34 committee, the ISO/IEC committee responsible for OOXML, is up to now? I call it a takeover attempt of ODF ... SC 34 would get to maintain ODF as well as Microsoft's competing parody "standard," OOXML. How totally smooth and shark-like. Under the guise of "synchronised maintenance", without which they claim SC 34 can't fulfill its responsibilities, they get control of everything. ... you can only read part of the resolutions passed by this stacked committee. As usual, there are deep secrets that the public can't access. That's just one part of what's wrong with those people and why ODF must never fall into their secretive clutches.

They hypocrisy of this is breathtaking. Anyone who bothered to ask why ISO needed two document formatting standards was angrily told that OOXML was developed for different reasons and had a purpose different from ODF. If that's true, the OOXML people are not the right people to look after ODF.

Update: It only took Slashdot 2 days to pick up someone else's report of this story this time! Hurray, they are getting faster.

  • Well, I have three hypotheses:

    * They are completely insane (not very likely)
    * They are pretty ignorant about computer technology (likely)
    * Microsoft bought them out. A year ago I would have called bullshit on this, but MSFT has shown that they are capable of this.
