Boom Blox
other slashdotters recommended it, and I have to agree. It starts out easy enough, and after a while, I'm thinking "Is that all there is to it???" Then I hit "The Plumber." I'd buy it again, if the rest of the game is as fun as that one puzzle was.
Pros: Interaction is easy - just aim and lob balls at your targets. Good use of the nunchuk as a way to scroll around / over the puzzles. This is in the "just grab the controls, play the boring instructive levels, then have fun" group.
Cons: Wiimote interaction is sometimes jerky, lags - looks like this game contains some code that either pegs the cpu or is badly written. Kind of reminiscent of cpu-intensive flash games on older computers. A partial cure is to not move the remote as much.
Rating: A KEEPER.
Mario Party 8
If you have pre-teens, or have to entertain them, sure, this game beats sitting down and watching Lion King for the 52nd time. But it's NOT something you'll pull out when company comes over and say "let's party!" Roll the dice, your character moves x number of spaces, most stuff happens without your interaction, and then you get to play a mini-game for a minute or two. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Pros: For the right age group, or entertaining the right age group, I could see this as being great. If you're playing with kids, you don't want to be beating the heck out of them all the time, so the pre-programmed game play and colourful graphics will work.
Cons: Not for anyone over 12, unless they took the short bus to school, or are TOTALLY trashed || bombed
Rating: Unless you have pre-teens to entertain, or lots of time to unlock all the mini-games, a waste of money. Buy Super Mario Galaxy instead. If you *do* have pre-teens around, it's iffy.

You should have waited a few years before buying a computer gaming system. With time these systems will eventually increase in speed and capability towards an acceptable level of performance.

I need to get Boom Blox ( just had a typo where that came out boob blox - my guess is that game already exists or will soon.)
I'm in that young kids group where Mario Party 8 is perfect. The lego games work really well too - though my wife and I have to step in and help out once in a while with more difficult puzzles. I enjoy lego star wars myself. I'm thinking about getting it for the ds.

Oddly enough I was playing Boom Blox at my parents tonight.
It's good but it can be annoying when you have to play a level a dozen times too unlock the next level.

I find my group of friends uses this when someone wants to have a game on but most of us just want to talk--it's a pretty decent "background noise" game.
Except at New Years Eve, when your latter con applies, and you have a dozen people giggling because someone said the Dry Bones character portrait looks like he's gonna grab your balls.
MP8 a kid favorite (Score:2)
My kids are 5, 7 and 9 years old. They LOVE playing 4 player MP8 with Daddy. Part of the fun of the game comes from playing it with kids who are enthralled by the whole competitive game. We usually play teams with the youngest on my team and the 2 older kids on the other team.
So, Tom, save it for when you have grandkids, nieces/nephews or friend's children over and they can't play outdoors.

Hi - long time, no see :-)
I'm definitely going to keep it - I'll find the time to unlock the mini-games for when my friends bring their kids over (when they - the kids - get a bit older) ... or I'll get the parents to do it for me :-) I'm sure that there are a few good ones among the dross.

Our family favorite is the one where everyone shakes their Wiimote vigorously simulating shaking a soda can. The person who shakes it the fastest gets the largest squirt of soda when all the toons open their cans. The kids think it's hilarious to squirt soda and I crack up at the masturbation metaphor.
See, there's lots of adult entertainment in those games!

This I *have* to see ... and get my friends to play - see how long they can keep a straight face - especially when their wives are here.
