Journal tomhudson's Journal: Slashdot "feature" - hide other people's posts. 4

update:: it must be a boundary condition, because while before, even in threaded mode, the comments in question were invisible, they're now visible in threaded (but not nested) mode. They must have gotten split over 2 logical pages or something ...

=========

Once a series of posts gets too deeply nested, that thread is no longer visible to users. It doesn't matter whether you're logged in or not, browsing in nested, flat, or threaded mode, or change your viewing threshold.

Apparently its not just a firefox/linux bug, because, while others using firefox/windows can still see everything. the bug is also present with opera/linux, seamonkey, and konqueror, all in nested mode.

More than about 50 posts in a chain trigger it. See an example here - 90 posts in the journal, but less than 20 visible in all modes ... you can crawl some of the hidden comments by going here.

I was going to submit it as a bug, but I'm not going to bother logging into sourceforge just to submit a bug report on an obscure "feature". Maybe they should consider letting logged-in users report bugs in a more convenient way - like adding a 4th option to make it "Publicize | Publish | Post | Report Bug". They can always prevent abuse by having the "Report Bug" option only enabled if you have good karma ... and anyone who abuses it can be "pink-paged" - and this way the JE would also be marked "private" automatically, so that in the future it doesn't clue in people who would abuse such a "feature".

Anyway, just a few ideas ...

    Next time I hear someone complaining about the performance of deviantART, I will take great pleasure in telling them how professionally maintained the site is compared to this one... :D
