Assuming another persona online isn't lying - its a common defensive measure, esp. now that the predators have discovered the net is a great place to hunt.

You haven't "done" anything that merits leaving. Maybe you should review the rules - you might find some comfort in them:

The rules:

1. it's okay to be uncomfortable with something;
2. it's okay to deal with personal issues in your own time and your own way;
3. in other words, its the same as in "real life" - there are nice people, and there are jerks; the nice ones will make the effort to understand, the jerks will be jerks. That's why they're jerks.

Gender roles are social constructs, not biological; conversely, gender identity is biological, but doesn't necessarily correspond to biological sex: IOW, life isn't simple, shit happens, yadda yadda yadda.

There's still a lot of misunderstanding about gender issues, even here on the dot, so I'll be writing a series of entries dealing with:

• the biological basis
• what help is available
• what questions to ask, what answers to expect
• the "coming out" process
• how to react to someone coming out
• advice for friends, family, etc.
• Whatever else people can thing of to ask ...
