Submission + - Texas Executed An Innocent Man (

swbirding writes: "Columbia Law School has published an 800+ page report which clearly shows that the state of Texas executed an innocent man in 1989. George W. Bush refused to reconsider the case, even though the evidence, even then, was substantial that the wrong man was convicted. The things that are done in the name of politics. Read about it in the Guardian or read the book."

Comment It is a Way of Life (Score 4, Insightful) 545

Here in New Mexico this is a way of life. The military checkpoints that the Border Patrol has set up everywhere routinely check for such things as radioactivity. When a chemical stress test is administered in cardiac units in Las Cruces, for instance, the patient is given a document describing the isotope used, the procedure administered, and contact information. The patient is then briefed on what to expect at the military check points. Having gone through such a test I can affirm that the monitoring system works. Alarms go off when you approaching the questioning zone - you are ordered to drive your vehicle to a segregated area - Border Patrol Agents with geiger counters surround your vehicle - if you are lucky, some idiot will babble spanish as you incessantly (as if spanish speaking and radioactivity had something to do with each other) and eventually they will clear you to return to your home. All of this so the people of Kansas and Oklahoma can feel safe - I don't care if the cowards feel safe or not.

Submission + - Not All Conservatives Are Stupid (

swbirding writes: "The Journal Psychological Science has published a recent study by Hodson and Busseri which found that "lower cognitive ability predicts greater prejudice, an effect mediated through the endorsement of right-wing ideologies". It appears from the well validated study that the reason people with lower intelligence levels are more likely to be racist is the conservative ideologies which they generally adhere to. However, the Guardian in a February 12 article by George Monbiot notes that "This is not to suggest that all conservatives are stupid. There are some very clever people in government, advising politicians, running thinktanks and writing for newspapers, who have acquired power and influence by promoting rightwing ideologies.""

Comment No Cell Service Here (Score 1) 173

What a joke, there is no cell service - of any type - where I live. On the other hand, I have a daily use package which works just fine when I travel to those areas where there is cell service. Being in constant touch is an affectation which has been exploited by the likes of Verizon and AT&T - how incredibly sad for those people who could use their money for basic safety and welfare.

Comment Crook County (Score 1) 208

I am not a fan of Facebook or Twitter, they are both pretty trite, but it is worth noting that the counties of eastern Oregon are not heavily populated -- this is not east coast or California folks. Although 30 aMW is a lot of power, that is relative, for an industrial or commercial complex it really is not that significant. The title of the post is really a misrepresentation, factually true but misleading to anyone who doesn't know the facts.

Quark! Quark! Beware the quantum duck!
