Submission + - FBI to launch nationwide facial recognition servic (nextgov.com) 1

hessian writes: "The FBI by mid-January will activate a nationwide facial recognition service in select states that will allow local police to identify unknown subjects in photos, bureau officials told Nextgov.

The federal government is embarking on a multiyear, $1 billion dollar overhaul of the FBI's existing fingerprint database to more quickly and accurately identify suspects, partly through applying other biometric markers, such as iris scans and voice recordings."

Submission + - Oldest Submerged City Visualized with CGI and Ster (nottingham.ac.uk)

Stirling Newberry writes: "Nottingham University's Pavlopetri project spent months measuring an city that sank beneath the waves 3000 years ago, perhaps in a tsunamai.

The result is a BBC documentary that features a detailed CGI reconstruction. The Independent chimes in about the oldest known submerged city first inhabited 5000 years ago and was rediscovered in 1967. Of course, Slashdot readers will want to dig into the (pdf) how stereo mapping was used to create the map in the first place."

Comment Don't mind me just venting. (Score 1) 4

I have decided that tech recruiters truly are the scum of the earth. 9/10 times they don't even get me an interview and treat me as if I'm wasting THEIR time, wtf you called me, I took the time to meet with you. If you didn't meet with me you would have met with somebody else, I on the other hand could have used my time working on the business I'm trying to start because people like you won't get me a job. To any recruiters out there, stop treating people like they are a waste of your time if there not a perfect fit for the job, their time may be more valuable than yours. If I apply directly for a position my odds of getting an interview are about 50/50. I'm a developer and the last time I met with a recruiter was for a testing position. The fact that I was a developer was a big plus, but they still didn't get me an interview because I don't have formal testing experience (again wtf I test every line of code I write before QA gets their hands on it, just not with automated testing tools). Anyway, you ask "where do people learn to talk like this?" The answer is India.

Submission + - 15 Year Old Student Discovers New Pulsar (nrao.edu) 1

ScuttleMonkey writes: "For the second time in as many years a student has made a discovery while participating in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC), a joint program between the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and West Virginia University designed to get students and teachers involved in analyzing data from the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). This time it was high school sophomore Shay Bloxton who discovered a brand new pulsar. "For Bloxton, the pulsar discovery may be only her first in a scientific career. "Participating in the PSC has definitely encouraged me to pursue my dream of being an astrophysicist," she said, adding that she hopes to attend West Virginia University to study astrophysics. Late last year, another West Virginia student, from South Harrison High School, Lucas Bolyard, discovered a pulsar-like object called a rotating radio transient. His discovery also came through participation in the PSC.""

Submission + - Space Station Astronauts Gain Internet Access

cyclone96 writes: Internet access on the International Space Station went live this morning. The crew now has full browsing capability via a special LAN and the Ku-band data link on the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) network, as described in this NASA press release. Flight Engineer T.J. Creamer used the access to post to twitter. Previous astronaut twitter postings had been performed through a third party on the ground via email.

Submission + - Microsoft's top devs don't seem to like own tools (computerworld.com)

ericatcw writes: Through tools such as Visual Basic and Visual Studio, Microsoft may have done more than any other vendor to make drag and drop-style programming mainstream. But its superstar developers seem to prefer old-school modes of hacking code. During the panel at the Professional Developers Conference earlier this month, the devs also revealed why they think writing tight, bare-metal code will come back into fashion, and why parallel programming hasn't caught up with the processors yet.

Comment Web and mobile development (Score 1) 1

Some programming languages come and go. Some do web development better than mobile and some are better for mobile development than the web. Then there are compatibility issues. I admit I haven't done any mobile development but for the web I like to use a LAMP stack its relatively easy to learn and is great for interacting with databases. But I think Java is the best for what you want to do, it has proven it's staying power. It can do both web and mobile development and has the best cross platform compatibility, the downside is a steeper learning curve than other languages and it's slower on the web than other options. Another option would be .NET which would give you the advantage of choosing from several languages such as Visual Basic, C++ and C#. The learning curve of Visual Basic is a very easy one. The disadvantage to .NET is cross platform compatibility. One important consideration is your work environment, if this is for your job then you need to consider what the other developers work with. Some work environments may prefer one platform over another.
