Although I had QBASIC as a child, I also learned on VB and I think an "industrious" young person would have no problem picking up the basics in today's world of languages.
I've never been canoeing before, but I imagine there must be just a few simple heuristics you have to remember... Yes, don't fall out, and don't hit rocks.
