Journal pudge's Journal: My Questions 23

I would ask Kerry tonight: "You say you're a hockey fan, so what would you do as President to end the NHL lockout and get the season going again?"

I would expect him to say he would try to get them in the same room and talk. I would want my President to say that it is none of his business as the President, and he would not abuse his power by getting involved in a private dispute, as much as the lockout dismays him.

What questions would you ask the candidates? What answers do you want to hear, or do you expect?

  • I would ask Kerry, "When is the warcraft beta going to open up?"

Where he will say "What the fuck?"

But I WANT him to say "As senator getting world of warcraft to open their beta is my number one priority! *stands up, starts chanting* FREE BNETD!"
  • OK, that one was too easy.

    1. "What do you think should be the balance between protecting intellectual property 'in order to encourage progress in science and the useful arts' and ensuring fair use rights and encouraging the creative commons/free exchange/building upon of ideas.?"

    2. "Yes, that's all well and good. Could you go back and answer question #1?"

  • To Kerry: "You mentioned you will make the Iraq war coalition broader. What countries, specifically, do you think will help out more than they are now, and in what ways will they help more?"

Ya, it's a bit too specific to be asked. But it is one that I wonder. John Kerry went on the record yesterday saying France and Germany of course wouldn't help any more, but that other countries would. Just who are these other countries that he's thinking of?
  • What would you do to restore our Constitutional freedoms in light of laws such as the Campaign Finance Reform legislation and the recently-expired Assault Weapons Ban? Will you veto bills that restrict these freedoms and encourage Congress to send you bills restoring our lost rights?
  • World Series picks?
  • Boxers or briefs? [google.com]

    No. Not really.

God, that question still irritates me.

    • Not sure if you've heard it, but it's a goodie:

Clinton, Perot and Dole are asked a question in the debate: "Do you wear boxers or briefs?" Clinton answers, "Boxers". Perot answers, "Briefs". Dole answers, "Well, Depends."

  • To Bush: Why don't we hear about homeland security with regard to domestic terrorism? Would you outline your plans to combat domestic terrorism?

To Bush: Why were maps of Iraq's oil fields part of the discussion that energy task force that Cheney convened in early 2001, months before 9/11 and our subsequent war with Iraq?

To Bush: Can you explain your inconsistency when you stated, in May 2002 in relation to the creation an independent commision to look into the events leading up to 9/11, "Since it deals w
    • that some have called the worst offense to personal civil liberties in the history of this nation.

Those people would have to be rather ignorant of history. Alien and Sedition Acts [wikipedia.org], anyone?

It's hard, hard work outdoing Adams.
      • perhaps RECENT MEMORY...
        • Whose memory? Do you not recall the lack of rights for blacks up through the 60s? Concentration camps in the 40s?

It's an affront to the people harmed by those to compare them to the Patriot Act, which requires a judge in order to do anything in regard to a citizen.

What, specifically, in the Patriot Act do you find violates your rights?
      • It's hard, hard work outdoing Adams.

Hold on, now. The Sedition Act is one thing, but Adams opposed the Alien Act and only signed it because 1. it would appease his party, 2. it only granted the power to act to the President, 3. he knew he would never exercise that power, 4. it was only temporary.

Signing the Alien Act has been much maligned, but if he didn't sign it, it would have fractured his party when he needed its support for his war against France, and if he didn't sign it, another -- possibly wors
    • To Bush: Can you explain your inconsistency when you stated, in May 2002 in relation to the creation an independent commision to look into the events leading up to 9/11, "Since it deals with such sensitive information, in my judgment, it's best for the ongoing war against terror that the investigation be done in the intelligence committee." and then reversed course and then reversed course and backed the commission after the families of 9/11 victims put public pressure on you?

Look, he thought it would be
      • Pudge... I think you are using a "nuanced" argument. In my "black and white" world, Bush Flip flopped. There is no room for changing position, even if it has valid reasons. In MY world, you must always and doggedly pursue your first impressions and gut feelings.
        • Riiiiiiiight.

Note that I have only very rarely called Kerry a "flip flopper," and it is only when it is very clearly the case. e.g., he says his position on Iraq has never changed, but he clearly said the invasion was the right decision, and now he clearly says it was the wrong one. So you can play this game with others, but with me, not so much. :-) Remember, I defended Kerry's vote on the $87b and his vote for authorization for war. I consider this example about Bush to be similar.
    • To Bush: Can you explain your inconsistency when you stated during your election bid in 2000: "I'm not so sure the role of the United States is to go around the world and say, 'This is the way it's got to be.'" when challenged about nation building and yet the United States is involved in nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan on a scale that rivals our efforts after World War II?

He has explained this many times. His explanation is simple: that was before 9/11, and now he believes that in order to prote
      • So, you're saying that there ARE situations that I should consider in my "black and white" view of the world that should make me reconsider my positions?!?!? Hmm. Switching position, with good reason, doesn't always consistuting flip flopping?!?!? That is a new concept to me.
        • Again though, my problem with Kerry and his previous position on Iraq and his current one is that he says today -- last night even -- that he has never changed his position on war. If he said he did, that he was wrong to support war, and explained why he changed, that would be one thing. He does not, and instead maintains he didn't change his position, when he clearly did.
    • To Bush: Can you explain your inconsistency in your administrations repeated assertions that there was a link between Iraq and Al Queada and its efforts to link Iraq with September 11th when various independent analysts, the 9/11 commission, and two of your own investigators (one of whom you fired for his assertion to the contrary your party line) have repeatedly and independently concluded that there were no such significant ties?

He never asserted there was a link between Iraq and 9/11. He asserted there
      • I will point out that I specifically said his "administration".
        • I cannot recall ever seeing anyone in his administration asserting that Iraq was involved in 9/11. None of the six or so quotes brought up this past week about Cheney showed him making such an assertion.
  • To Kerry: You opposed the strategy that eventually won the Cold War; you are now opposing the strategies employed in the War on Terror: why should voters believe you're right this time around?

I wouldn't ask Bush anything; what's there to ask? Love him or hate him, I think that in order not to know what he stands for or will try to do, you would have had to lived in a cave in, oh, say Outer Mongolia maybe, without any access whatsoever to any media at all, and even then it's touch and go. Bush will pursue t
