So I see the Red Sox signed Matsuzaka. How do you feel about that?
I understand the whole "Keep away from the Yankees" aspect, but with the amount of money they're sending to Japan for a guy who has never pitched in the major leagues they probably could have signed three of the following: Zito, Clemens*, Lilly, Meche, Schmidt, etc...
*Still hearing rumors that Clemens might be returning to the Red Sox, though.

First, you can't look at it as a $103m package. It's $52m. You can't just add the figures together and compare it to getting those other pitchers, because the signing fee does not count against the cap, so that $51m costs them a lot less than the $52m they are paying Matsuzaka. And you couldn't get Zito + any of those pitchers for that amount of money, as Zito pulled in $7.9m base in 2006, and over six years (the term of Matsuzaka's contract) that would be $47.4m.
