Journal pudge's Journal: Discussion2 Updates 11

Lots of fixes for the Discussion2 beta. Nothing too obvious by looking at it, but it should work properly on IE7 beta and non-Mac Firefox now.

It does not work in IE6.

It does not work in Opera, because of an odd bug in how Opera parses object literals in JavaScript: numeric keys are restricted to 2^23, and our cids are greater than that. (I filed a bug report, it's bug-207597, but I have no way of knowing if or when they plan to fix it.)

It does not work in iCab 3 beta, because of what I suspect is improper CSS implementation.

We can work around the problems remaining in Opera, but I would prefer they fix their bug. I don't think we will bother with iCab, and the three people who use it. I like iCab and all, but we're busy ... patches welcome. Hopefully they can fix it on their end.

IE6 is, of course, the biggie. I have no idea how and if we can get it working on IE6. That IE7 works properly is great, because it means a. IE6 is the problem, not us, and b. it will be fixed in the next version. But ... can Slashdot wait for Microsoft?

Beyond all this, the CSS was made a lot more sane and proper, and I changed a lot of the JavaScript behavior, using plenty of feedback from users. So, thanks. Still in progress though ... hopefully soon we can open it up to more users than just subscribers.

  • Perhaps you can point me to the bugzilla or whatever.

When moderating, the boxes act 'funny' in Mozilla/Win32 after you've expanded a conversation once. You can't get moderation box to 'pull down' but you can using the up and down arrows select the proper moderation selection (i.e. Troll, Insightful et al).

I like the feel of it. Its much easier to handle than having to change the entire conversation at a lower mod level such as 1 or 0 to get all of the comments, and lose your place.

I do not see that behavior. I saw it last week, but we fixed it in this refresh. Are you sure you've seen this since the update last night? Also, what version of Mozilla? I am usinfg Firefox 1.5.0.3 on XP SP2.
      • Same version. I believe I had mod points yesterday. If you'd like to give me mod points and a dummy convo to moderate, I'd be more than happy to do more in depth testing.

I've also noticed that in large conversations the re-rendering between more and less takes a very long amount of time.

        System Specifications:

AMD Athlon 2200+ XP (1.8 ghz)
        512 MB RAM
Windows XP Professional, SP 2 (legit even)
        Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.3

        - FasterFox 1.0.1

        • OK, good. :) I would give you mod points, but I don't want to mess with the system. Trust me, it works now. :-)

As to slowness ... what URL? I have noticed FF can be especially slow the first time you try to expand/collapse. Slower than Safari even.
          • Just pick a thread that falls over the max rollover (my example was the Racism in WoW story from Thurs / Friday).

Thanks for your attention to this man. I appreciate your looking into it. Sorry I didn't know the proper channels to report the bug through (care to point me in the right direction for future reference).
  • I have Reparent Highly Rated Comments unchecked in my preferences. I'll use it once Discussion2 obeys that and doesn't reparent comments replying to hidden comments.

It's a work in progress though and I can wait. Nice to see it coming along.
    • No, I do not believe comments are reparented at all in discussion2 (except for one case: where the thread nests too deeply). What you are seeing is not reparenting, probably, but simply seeing "orphaned" children, where a child's parent is not visible, but it is because it is higher rated, so it looks like it is part of another thread.
      • Yeah my goof. So I'll redescribe my problem. I don't like seeing orphaned children comments. With the existing system I don't.

When highly-rated comments are replying to an abbreviated comment or a hidden one, I'd like to see a checkbox in Preferences for both cases to fully display them, abbriviate them to a single line, or hide them nested with the hidden parent.

I do think there is a bug when you look at this case. [slashdot.org] Presently the grandparent and grandchild posts are at +2, while the middle post is at +1
        • I'll pass your suggestion along.

And I disagree that it is a bug; from my perspective, it is a UI issue. A bug implies the code is not working as it should, whereas if I simply threw up -- for example -- an HR tag to separate threads, it would fix the "bug."

That's mere semantics though: I agree it is a problem, and we know about it, and will fix it, and have some ideas in mind for how to do so. The only reason I distinguish as I do about between bug and UI issue is to note that thus far we've primarily foc

Is this a new CSS support for our esteemed SlashDot.Org system?
