Journal pudge's Journal: Dershowtiz 13

I learned from several sources who had known Alan Dershowtiz as a student that he gave blood sacrifices to Hitler, and that he was infamous for killing baby seals and kittens.

Really, it's true.

It is quite clear from the third paragraph that Dershowitz has absolutlely no interest in telling "the truth" about William Rehnquist, because "the truth" does not rely on unsubstantiated hearsay; it serves only one purpose, to prejudice people against the subject, without them being able to examine the actual facts.

I didn't bother reading further than that, because there was no need. I get it: Dershowtiz hates Rehnquist and will say anything to make him look bad, regardless of how accurate it is.

Sounds more like something Karl Rove would do, if you ask me.
  • I'm hardly a huge Dershowitz fan, and think his characterization of Rehnquist is wildly exaggerated. But this isn't a trial, it's the Huffingwhatever. You're talking like he's bound by rules of evidence.

Actually, the bit you're freaking out over is one of the less flimsy parts there.

    • But this isn't a trial, it's the Huffingwhatever. You're talking like he's bound by rules of evidence.

No, I am talking like he should have respect for truth.
  • ...for reading that site. James Taranto [opinionjournal.com] has a transcript of Dershowitz's outburst on Fox. He also counters some of AD's 'on-topic' assertions about Rehnquist's Supreme Court CV.

I usually enjoy reading the comments that always come after an article like that, and wonder if those people are living in the same universe as I am. I was not disappointed this time.
    • I don't read sites like that. Someone pointed me to this article.
    • lol: I think you'd have to call him an activist, whether you are conservative or liberal. That is, he struck down congressionally enacted statutes because he didn't think that they comported with federalism.

Uh, it is because he thought they did not comport with the Constitution, which is not "activism," or if it is, then that's the good and necessary kind of "activism."

And then he lies and says that Rehnquist only said the 14th applies to race for his whole career until Bush v. Gore. And the funniest thing

Hey, but the comments are funny. :)
  • Dershowitz is no model of fairness or impartiality.
    • True enough. But he does say some good things. He sticks up for the Second Amendment, he blasts people on the left when they abandon the principles the left should stand for (he has had many unkind words for Clinton), and he has had the guts to stand up against Noam Chomsky's pseudo-scholarship when few others on the left ever would.

It is unfortunate that such a bright and bold man, who is so often on the side of truth, has to then resort to such cheap stunts. But maybe that is par for the course if you'
      • If the goose stepping claim is true, I could see why Dershowitz, as a Jew, might have a problem with the guy.
        • Yes, someone who cares about the Jewish people is offended by people who sympathize with Nazis.

And someone who cares about truth is offended by people who throw out unsubstantiated accusations to smear someone for their own partisan purposes.

One of the things I found interesting about dershowitz's article is that he is pissed at Hannity for criticizing him off the air when he didn't have a chance to respond:

Only after I was off the air and could not respond did the attack against me begin, which is typical of Hannity's bullying ambush style. He is afraid to attack when there's someone there to respond.

Now Dershowitz is consciously breaking the cultural practice of not speaking ill of someone after they are dead (and doing it publicly):

My mother always told me that when a person dies, one should not say anything bad about him. My mother was wrong.

My understanding of why we tend not to criticize people after the die is that it has to do with the fact that the person is not around any more to defend themselves.

Success is something I will dress for when I get there, and not until.
