Journal mercedo's Journal: Another Meaning Of Silence 4

Silence is not always virtue.

I once visited Nikko and saw its famous 'Don't See, Don't Say, Don't Listen' Apes Sculpture. The shrine was establised in the early ages of Edo Period(1613-1863) when the feudal system in the Middle Ages established. People were urged to obey in ruling Tokugawa clan and urged not to see, say, listen anything wrong in the period. The sculpture itself was a very intricate one but knowing the true meaning the sculpture implied, it seemed not very impressive to all of us.

We have to speak out when it's very necessary to do so. We know but it's harder than expected.

  • It does seem like a classic way of getting people to keep their mouths shut doesn't it
  • The feudal system in Europe was long gone by the 17th century.

    • It was back to 1215, but mainly in 1623,1643, through civil revolutions, in 17th century - Britain succeeded in putting an end to its feudal system and became a forerunner of modernisation, America followed in 1776, and French followed in 1789.

Germany, Italy, Japan had to wait till late 19th century. At that time already Britain, USA, France were haves and Germany, Italy, Japan were have-nots.

Later inevitably these two groups had to fight world war.
