Journal johndiii's Journal: Suggestion - Disable AC Posting in JEs 14

The ability to disable anonymous posting in journal entry comments.

I've only been reading journals seriously for a couple of months, but (from what I've seen) AC comments are rarely constructive in journal discussions. Except for perhaps one or two comments (of hundreds to thousands), I have not seen any that were both constructive and posted AC. In most cases, AC postings in journal entries are there only to harass either the writer or one of the other posters. Of course, this would be at the option of the author of the journal, so one could always allow it.

This may not be possible, technically, but I think that it might make Slashdot a slightly better place. I'm going to submit this (I'm pretty sure that it isn't in the FAQ already), but I'd appreciate any comments (positive or negative). Even posted anonymously. :-)

Suggestion - Disable AC Posting in JEs

Comments Filter:
  • Submit a feature request [sourceforge.net].
  • You can specify the following access levels for comments :

    Just Friends
    Just Friends and Friend's Friends
    No Foes
    No Foes or Friend's Foes

Having said that, I think that a No Anonymous Cowards option would be a good idea, as the existing option restrict the number of people who can respond to your JEs.
    • I think that is just for subscribers. It comes up on occasion for me, but not always and, when I select any sort of restriction it just turns off comments.

Then again, I could be missing something.
      • I subscribed for two reasons: so that I could see more than the last 24 comments for a user, and so that I could get "relationship change" messages. Seeing the stories in advance is cool, but I wouldn't pay for the privilege. I don't care one way or the other about ads (I block the minimum). It's worth $15 (or so) a year to me. For a little while, I was careful about turning off the asterisk, but I started to forget, and now I don't bother.

If I had to subscribe to turn off AC messages in my journal,
    • Exactly. I'd probably exclude foes, if I were going to do anything (and if I were going to in for the whole foes thing), but I don't really want to exclude people.
      • Not really....
I'd rather know *why* people mark me as a foe. A befriending/befoeing reason added would be nice in the subscription notification.
I recently got some freaks and even one with a very low slashdot ID number. I have absolutely no idea why they added me foe. I'd like to know though.

I exclude nobody from my journal, even though I can as a subscriber. I only subscribed for support, I didn't expect to get additional features (the befriending/befoeing notification is nice though)

        • I assume that people make me a friend for the same reason that I do: the person has written something interesting, and I am interested to read what they write in the future. The is mostly in the realm of journals, though I have added a few people because I want to track their comments. If someone signs on as my fan, I will reciprocate, on the grounds that I would probably be interested in what they have to say. I don't make a friend without reading a bunch of what they have to say.

I do not yet have an

I agree with this. If fact, for a while I posted journal entries when I friended/foed anyone. But that was a lot of effort, and naturally, not reciprical. Oh well, another, "Please send patches" request, I guess.

  • Just because it is an option I do not envision using doesn't mean it's bad. I just set my prefrences for not being notified that an AC has posted to my journal and generally ignore them.
  • I think you're right. AC journal postings (from what I've seen) are just people making disgusting statements. They serve no useful purpose, because people don't really get modded down in JE postings (which is what I believe motivates most non-trolls to post AC to articles & the like -- fear that they'll get modded down for an OT comment or something).

I keep AC postings set to -1, so I don't really have to read them, but I know when they're there. Doesn't bother me at this point, but being able to elim
