Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Soekris net5501-70

My Soekris net5501-70 arrived wednesday. I couldn't take much of a look at it, because tuesday I spent time with that guy, whose graphics card I busted, to repair his machine and show him around the new installation. I promised my wife to spend time with her the next days. So, I did.

I still took time to open up the case (No, I didn't get the rackmount version) and take a peek. I wanted at least to try to see the boot sequence in the serial console. I took my laptop and... ehm, where the fuck is my serial port? Aha, okay, I really thought I had one. Damn, should have ordered a USB-Serial adaptor from Wim. Next time, I guess.

So, I attached it to my wifes computer (which does have a Serial port). First I thought "Hyperterminal", launched it and it wanted to configure some stuff. No! Then I though: PuTTY must be able to do this. Sure enough... Took PuTTYs defaults... Hmmm, only gibberish, but it does somehow look like the way a boot sequence would look like by the timing of the text output. Probably a wrong serial port setting. Aha, 19200bps instead of 9600bps. Works fine...

Nice, I thought the serial console would be a bit more of a hassle, but it's really easy.

I'll see when I get some quality time with my computers to do the full migration of mako.sharks.

On a quasi related note: I got notified that my Asus EEE PC was shipped today. Yay! I'll probably get it monday, I guess.

The reason computer chips are so small is computers don't eat much.
