ms_gen writes "Here it comes, gamers and aviation fans: Microsoft has announced that they are working on a new flight simulator to follow the previous Ms Flight Simulator. For those of you who don’t know, Ms Flight Simulator was abandoned by Microsoft in January 2009, along with their Microsoft ESP 3D visual database. For the latter, it was due to a lack of response from the industry. Microsoft had released ESP as the new ‘industry standard’ in 3D visual modeling but did not succeed in convincing the industry..
A public beta is scheduled to come out later this year.
Lockheed Martin has on the other hand taken advantage of the Microsoft ESP and Microsoft Flight Simulator X technologies to create a simulator geared towards military training. The Prepar3D application is currently presented as a standalone application and a SDK that can be downloaded for free after approval. The company plans to offer the software at a cost later in the process, at which point evaluation licenses will be made available.
Lockheed Martin being a big player in the aviation industry, there is a chance that Prepar3D may become a substantial competitor to existing simulation providers."
