dubiousdave's Journal: lunch bowling

Since FK is really bored and begging for something to read, I'll write a JE about my long lunch break. A group of 8 of us went over the the student union to bowl today. It was the first time I've bowled in probably 10 years, and as far as I can remember, only about the 4th time I've bowled ever. I think the two games I bowled today were my best ever, and I managed to do it, somehow, without drinking. Bowling without beer seems inherently wrong, but I tried it anyway because the beer selection at the union is reputed to suck.

My first 4 or so frames sucked much ass, but I found a small cache of bowling mojo, and finished strong (for me) to get a whopping total of 122. Yes, read me in awe. Fear my bowling fu. I bowled a strike on the first frame of the second game, but that was the end of my mojo charge for a while. The middle of the game exhibited great suckage, starting with the one pin I knocked down following my strike. Again, I had a decent finish to scrape up a total of 99.

I need some shoes like the ones I rented. They were the bowling shoes probably designed to deter theft by being too horrible to wear. They were so not me that I liked them. They were made of panels of day-glo orange, green, and pink. I think shoes like that would nicely offset my normally astoundingly boring wardrobe. It would confuse and annoy people, and that is the goal of all systems admins.

My family has a bowling tournament once a year where we compete against my uncle and aunt's family. Everyone talks tough and acts all competitive, but for everyone involved it's the only time we ever bowl.

Of course, this is for real bowling (5-pin), not your wimpy American game :-)

Judging by my scores, you'd think there were only 5 pins to hit.

with 5-pin bowling, the centre pin counts for 5 pins, the next two count for 3 points each, and the outside two count for two points each

and the ball is much smaller than with 10-pin bowling, so there's no finger holes because you don't need them to hold the ball

Indoors. The lane looks pretty much the same as a 10-pin bowling lane -- don't know for sure if it's the exact same dimensions.

With carpal tunnel glarring at me from my wrists, I get a massive 100 on a good day. My high was ~130 ish. Once.

Usually I get under 100.

Things I Like About Bowling

Well, since I don't drink beer (never acquired a taste for it), the best thing about bowling is the shoes. Definitely the shoes.

Oh, and all the hot guys, too. Mmm mmm mmm!
