Comment It's the stupid BIOS defaults (Score 4, Interesting) 35

Neither ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, or ASRock ship their z-series boards with Intel stock defaults. They all do dumb shit to the default settings, which for some can just cause high temps or slow downs, but for others can cause the machine to crash after 10 minutes, or immediately when you start calling AVX.

I had to deal with this firsthand. I thought I had a faulty motherboard from Gigabyte, but in the end it wound up being bad defaults. I wasted 3 days and had to become familiar with overclocking in order to fix their fucked defaults.

Intel needs to get put pressure on their partners to only ship boards with Intel's specifications as the default. They can instead include other profiles that have what the motherboard manufacturer wants.

Comment As a business, avoid Google (Score 1, Insightful) 13

Google, over the last 20 years, has demonstrated that you should not have your business rely on their services, unless that service has been active for at least a decade. They deprecate and remove services so quickly that any type of trust you can have in them to keep something has completely eroded.

I've been couped up at my house for two years. TWO FUCKING YEARS. I've vaccinated, and boosted. I wear a mask while in public indoor spaces. I feel like I'm smart about the risks I accept.

I want to travel again. I've done my part. The lack of sympathy should be directed at those who are refusing to get vaccinated, not those that had been doing everything right and just want to get away for a week.

It's more like like the door was wide open and someone looked inside quick (without actually entering the house) and saw it was full of valuables. Instead of taking said valuables, they contacted the home owner so they could re-secure their house. After the issue was resolved, they then wrote a story about what happened. Instead of thanking the person who helped you protect your stuff, you threaten to have them arrested for even looking at your house.

This guy is a grade A moron.

I'm a sysadmin of 7 years and I like systemd. Systemd, as an init system, is superior to SysVinit and other init systems that came before it. Services can have proper dependencies (instead of just relying on a static order), and it can start services in parallel making it far more efficient.

I get some people hate systemd, but honestly it isn't that bad of an init system. There's a reason why it's being used in new distros.
