Journal buffer-overflowed's Journal: Rargh!!!! I am an OCD hard drive organizer 7

Went over to a friend's house after work the other day... their computer was a mess. 516 pieces of spyware, enough program folders that XP couldn't display them all at once, and icons and other crap littering their desktop.

Drove me near mad.

So I offer to sort it (eyes downward, shuffling my feet with a baseball cap in my hand).

No, I like it like that.

Rarrrggghhh.

Which on a segue reminds me of something. Was at my uncle's not too terribly long ago, trying to walk him through fixing a problem. Eventually I just asked him to move.

"Why do IT guys always ask people to move?"

"Because watching you use a computer is like watching Lassie try to communicate. Sure, she's smart and she'll succeed eventually, but Timmy needs out of the well now."

  • "Sad" for the 516 pieces of spyware. I never knew that there were that many. Sad it is. I hate having icons & stuff on my desktop. I keep it as clean as possible. In fact, I've disabled the desktop on KDE so that I never have to see a thing again, until there is a specific need. Maybe I'll start storing files in there, with the idea that I can enable the desktop & disable it according to the task @ hand.

"Funny" for the Lassie illustration. I'm fortunate enough that I have never needed to get Timmy

I actually like the desktop, as long as it doesn't get too cluttered. When I download something I intend to install, I generally drop it on to the desktop. I'll also pop a few ver

      • I do the same thing.
      • Well, I do something similar. I remapped the My Documents folder to point to my user folder on the server, which is also mapped to drive w:.
      • Actually, you have a good point with downloading to the desktop. For some reason, it's the obvious choice on Windows, but it never occurred to me to do it with KDE. Thanks for the idea.

That batch file idea for My Documents is an excellent idea. I'll try that. I find it very disorienting when I type "cd" @ the windows command line. "X:" isn't the same as "cd", but it's close enough.
  • It's not very often that I laugh out loud when reading /. posts -- but that Lassie comment is priceless! :-)

  • ...meaning about all computers that I don't manage. Even fellow IT people seem somtimes not to know about spyware. *sigh* I've seen brand new P-IV's bogged down by spyware after three months of usage.

My GF's computer is also the biggest mess. I tried to fix it, but short of a reinstall (or my incompetence fixing WinXP) there is really nothing I can do anymore. It's probably due to her little brother installing any crap (latest new addition: RealOne... aaaargh!) he finds and surfing with IE. From the
