Journal btlzu2's Journal: Mystic River 12

BEWARE: Some spoilers in the comments (not the JE itself)!!!

I just watched Mystic River (thanks Netflix) last night and boy was that a good movie. The acting was powerful. Tim Robbins never ceases to amaze me with his portrayals of vastly different people. He plays a man who was molested as a boy and appears on the brink of madness, yet he has a soft kindness to him that confuses you and makes you wonder what's really going on in his head.

I didn't even know Laurence Fishburne was in Mystic River till I saw him on the screen. He was ok, pretty much any decent actor could have played the cocky, flippant partner, but I like him.

Very good crime drama/morality fable. Pretty bleak and the ending was somewhat unresolved, which is ok, but I think this movie needed a bit more closure. At least my mind was begging for it.

***1/2 / ****

  • All I want to know is your opinion of Yor, the Hunter from the Future. [imdb.com]

For what other movie comes close to this masterpiece? I ask you!

    Cheers,

    Ethelred

    • um, i'm almost embarassed to admit, that i have seen this. i couldn't remember what the name was, but reading the synopsis and reading the one review... it click "yep, i know this."

      definite MST3k material, this film.

      • The best part is the way you're never quite sure if they meant the movie to be serious or not.

They showed this on TV a few times in the early 80s, probably because the broadcast rights were *ahem* such a bargain, then it disappeared from the radar for a while. But I still remember it...

Oh, if you liked Yor, you'll love I Come In Peace [imdb.com]. The movie with the killer CD...

        Cheers,

  • I haven't seen much about this movie, but I did catch one scene where someone's talking about something bad that happened to his daughter.

Ever since I became a parent, I have had to be *really* careful about the movies I watch, because I'll have serious nightmares and anxiety as a result. Two movies that stuck with me for a long time were Boys Don't Cry (still an *excellent* flick -- highly recommended) and Trainspotting (for obvious reasons, if you've seen it). Even just the suggestion of violence involvi
  • I think I made bf de SW watch it with me in the theater. It'll be good for you, I told him. And good it was, if a little disturbing.

And yes, no closure. But I think the movie needed to not have closure.
    • I know it didn't need to have closure, but I wanted it. That's not always typical for me, but I wanted the death of Tim Robbin's character to be sympathized with more. Of course, I took comfort in the fact that his character suffered all of his life since the molesting and now he was no longer suffering. I guess I'm just a bit too sappy--I felt for his character a lot and the ending manipulated me into sympathizing with Sean Penn's character more (and thinking his wife was pretty cut-throat and power hu

... Have you seen Monster? Now THAT will give yu conflicting emotions.
      • Hey, thanks. Now I don't have to watch the movie because YOU JUST POSTED EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THE END.

        Nice job, fartknocker.

        ;-)

        • Oh SHIT! I've never done that before. I know you gave me the wink, but I'm sorry nonetheless (in case you ever did decide to watch it). I'm usually much more sensitive to spoilage. :)
          • You are just so sweet, apologizing like that!!

The appropriate answer, of course, is a correspondingly heartfelt, "Go fuck yourself, Bethanie!" with the concommitant smiley or winky or *just kidding* disclaimer.

I really like Tim Robbins, too, though strictly as an actor.

            • Oooh, you taught me a new word. I have never ever heard in my entire life concomitant. (Although you spelled it wrong!) ;)

Go fuck yourself, Bethanie! ;) (concomitant)
              • I thought I might be misspelling it, but as I am doing all of my typing one-handed these days (new babies take at least one hand to nurse), I figgered I'd let it slide.
