You misunderstand what the rest of the world does.
You think programmers get to write fulfilling awesome pieces of code to stimulate their creativity? No... they write boring back-end database and financial software.
You think lawyers all get to smartly outwit each other in their cerebral battles in court? No... it's mostly drafting contracts from templates and doing boring papery things.
You think that doctor gets to save lives by cleverly doing differential diagnosis and finding the obscure diseases that no-one could? No... it's mostly the same snotty noses and strange genital rashes day in and day out.
I could go on, but I think the point here is that work is not glamorous for most people.
So if you have to play a pop cover in the bar to make ends meet - suck it up! Go experiment and be deep on your own time and dime. The rest of the world does too.
Obligatory: We're in Australia, you insensitive clod.
Most salaried staff have their salaries specified as a yearly amount. How you break it up and your pay frequency is irrelevant.
Even worse, in our software product we discovered that this year actually has 54 weeks. We usually cater for 52 and the occasional 53, but "ISO weeks" just turned out strange this time.
We renamed it!
So, to follow your analogy, it is not so much like throwing your mitten in the opposite direction than it is trying to jet your way to the bank by a single, unenthusiastic fart. Which, as a strategy, is pretty close to the usual generous slashdot manner.
You sir made my day! I tip my hat to thee.
So what stops me from burying my competition with this? Instead of getting cheap far-east labor to link to me in linkfarms, the same people will just now engage in blocking out my competitors.
There's no easy solution.
People are less likely to hem and haw with a couple of AK-47s pointed at them. Most people would just flip the switch.
Watch this youtube video - it explains a lot more about it - including where the phonebook is. Image that, pen and paper!
What on earth happened to Maemo? It's running on my N900 right now and pretty awesome. Who wouldn't like some debian niceness on their phone?
Well, for people like you and me who do this, a more "advanced" and elegant solution is not a problem. Just open up a VM to boot off the CD. For grandma, rebooting off the CD is good enough.
Printed and bound.
Try killing a spider with an ebook.
I'm in Australia you insensitive clod!
It still happens - called the persistence hunt. Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUpo_mA5RP8
